run on petrol or diesel, one man has started a business converting cars to run on vegetable oil.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd they are proving to be far more efficient, and popular, than he ever imagined.\u003cbr/\u003eCar crazy Los Angeles is loaded with used cars, and the used car lots that sell them. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this car lot crammed with Mercedes is no ordinary garage that sells used vehicles. \u003cbr/\u003eThese German-built vehicles  belong to Lovecraft Biofuels. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd they are about to have a very unique place on the crowded streets of LA. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile everybody else is out filling up on petrol or diesel, the new owners of a Lovecraft-equipped Mercedes will drive away on oil -- vegetable oil that is. \u003cbr/\u003ePerched on a trendy strip of Sunset Boulevard, Lovecraft's speciality is the sale of Mercedes-Benz diesels, converted to run on vegetable oil. \u003cbr/\u003eIn fact, they're modified to run on new or recycled vegetable oil, or soybean oil, or even regular old diesel fuel if you still want to pay the price. \u003cbr/\u003eBrian Friedman -- owner of Lovecraft Biofuels -- fills up a veggie, fuel-powered Mercedes in the company garage from a can of vegetable oil. \u003cbr/\u003eFriedman says you can buy the oil at local supermarkets or better still get the leftover cooking oil from restaurants for free.  \u003cbr/\u003eFriedman started converting Mercedes about four years ago in San Francisco. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a relatively simple process to convert the cars, if you know what you're doing, he says. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it was a slow start, Brian admits, when sceptical Mercedes owners wouldn't let him convert their cars. \u003cbr/\u003eSo Brian just started buying and converting Mercedes on his own. \u003cbr/\u003eFor about US$700 dollars, Brian's mechanics will convert a diesel Mercedes to run on one hundred-percent vegetable oil.\u003cbr/\u003eBrian says they'll also run on other oils -- like bio-diesel, transmission oil, motor oil, and kerosene. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the LA-based dealer says he can't keep up with the demand.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the converted cars on the lot this week are already spoken for. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd Brian says a steady stream of shoppers keep coming to the lot, almost seven days a week. \u003cbr/\u003eThe converted cars can travel about twenty-five miles per gallon of the vegetable fuel. \u003cbr/\u003eNot the greatest fuel economy, but some potential buyers like the idea of a re-tooled, ready-to-go alternative to a gas-powered car.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rising price of fuel, and concerns for the environment, are some of the reasons driving some buyers to Brian's veggie car lot. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Brian, like any budding
