Under a process mandated by the Colombian Constitution, the prosecutor general presented evidence against Samper to the Chamber of Representatives in February. That evidence includes accusations by former campaign officials and others that President Samper knowingly received funds from narco-traffickers for his 1994 presidential campaign. He faces charges of illicit enrichment, fraud, perjury and cover-up.\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Nicholas Burns, State Department Spokesman\u003cbr/\u003eColombian President Ernesto Samper is accused of accepting six (m) million dollars in donations from the Cali drug cartel to finance his 1994 election campaign.\u003cbr/\u003eBusiness leaders have called on Samper to step down, saying the scandal has hurt the economy. Namely its composition, its impartiality, its thoroughness and the rigour of its questioning. Colombians from all walks of life have called for a credible investigation and a full airing of the charges against President Samper.
