The Greek Patriarch of Jerusalem presided over the spectacular  - and smoky - ritual.Many of...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eNatural Sound \u003cbr/\u003eWorshipers have packed the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem for the Greek  Orthodox Easter ceremony of the Holy Fire. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Greek Patriarch of Jerusalem presided over the spectacular  - and smoky - ritual.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of those taking part, had queued for hours to make sure of the place. \u003cbr/\u003eThe faithful arrive for one of the most important events of the year for the Greek  Orthodox church.\u003cbr/\u003eJerusalem is at the heart of their faith - and nowhere is more sacred than the Church of  the Holy Sepulchre.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Saturday worshipers were gathered for a very special - and spectacular religious  service.  \u003cbr/\u003eEvery year thousands flock to the traditional \"Holy Fire\" ceremony a centre piece of the  Greek Orthodox Easter.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt dates back to the third century.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Greek Orthodox faith, a monk entered the darkened tomb of Jesus in  the Sepulchre - but he emerged carrying a flame and proclaimed it a miracle. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople arrive up to four hours early to ensure a good view.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a tight squeeze to fit everyone inside the church. \u003cbr/\u003eThey've gathered to see the Greek patriarch carry what believers say is the holy fire of  god. \u003cbr/\u003eThen the sparks fly.\u003cbr/\u003eThe flame is spread from the Patriarch to each worshiper in turn. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Sepulchre fills with a warm glow from scores of candles and the air thickens with  smoke.\u003cbr/\u003eLater the faithful attend a Greek Orthodox service marking their Easter - which takes  place a week later than the Roman Catholic and Protestant Easter.\u003cbr/\u003eJerusalem  April 13, 1996\u003cbr/\u003e1.
