Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the patients at Kitale District Hospital were allegedly injured in an attack on their village by a group known as the Sabaot Land Defence Force (SLDF), a militia group fighting for the redistribution of land in western Kenya.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television footage showed some severely burned children, apparently as a result of their homes being set on fire, and several people suffering from gunshot wounds.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to nurses at the hospital at least 13 people were hacked, shot or burned to death in the attack.\u003cbr/\u003eThere was no official claim of responsibility. \u003cbr/\u003eA member of the SLDF, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said at the time of the attack that his group was simply trying to \"correct historical injustices\".\u003cbr/\u003eOn Thursday the Kenyan military tried to drive the gunmen from the forests and caves of Mount Elgon, sealing off an area where witnesses say soldiers were firing from helicopters to try to contain the territorial violence.\u003cbr/\u003eThe operation, some 500 kilometres (300 miles) northwest of the capital, Nairobi, began on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a reminder that the resolution - at least on paper - of Kenya's recent political crisis has not ended decades-old tensions over land and inequality that were inflamed by disputes over President Mwai Kibaki's re-election in December.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice stationed along the route to Mount Elgon, manning checkpoints on dusty roads lined with banana trees and onion farms, ordered journalists and aid workers to turn back on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003eThere was no word on casualties in the military operation.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral villagers outside the region sealed off by the military said they have been seeing helicopters firing for several days now, most recently before dawn on Thursday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe SLDF has been blamed for violence well before the December 27 presidential election.\u003cbr/\u003eThe election, which international and local observers say was rigged, unleashed weeks of bloodshed that killed more than 1,000 people and exposed simmering resentments over land and resentment toward Kibaki's Kikuyu ethnic group, long dominant in politics and the economy.\u003cbr/\u003eKibaki and his rival, Raila Odinga, have now agreed to share power under increasing
