Wide of minister with reporters\u003cbr/\u003eFor nearly 140 years it's been a vital shortcut between East and West, cutting days off the time ships must travel from Asia to Europe or America, but as the scourge of Somali piracy prompts major shipping companies to seek another route, the Suez Canal now faces an enormous challenge.\u003cbr/\u003eEgypt, which is heavily dependent on the fees it charges ships to go through the Canal, has expressed concern over a possible drop in income - though it says it's hopeful an international flotilla patrolling the pirate infested waters will be able to ensure safe passage. \u003cbr/\u003eGeneral Ahmed Fadel, head of Suez Canal Authority, told The Associated Press that piracy would definitely have a \"bad effect\" on their financial situation.\u003cbr/\u003eFadel said the problem would cause an increase in insurance charges for shipping companies, who may then opt for cheaper alternatives. \u003cbr/\u003eAt least two companies have announced their vessels will take the long route around the southern tip of Africa rather than go through the canal, which requires crossing through the Gulf of Aden, scene of most pirate attacks.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 120-mile (193-kilometre) long canal gives a vital shortcut linking the US and Europe with the Indian Ocean and its Asian ports. \u003cbr/\u003eThe canal runs between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, where there have been no pirate attacks. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the only access from the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean is through the Gulf of Aden, where Somali pirates have hijacked more than three dozen ships and attacked dozens more so far.\u003cbr/\u003eTo avoid the Gulf of Aden, Europe's largest shipping firm A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S said last week it was telling some of its slower ships to sail around Africa's Cape of Good Hope, and Norwegian shipping group Odfjell SE ordered its more than 90 tankers to do the same. \u003cbr/\u003eThat means adding up to two weeks to some voyages.\u003cbr/\u003eOther firms, including one of the world's largest oil tanker companies, Frontline Limited, have said they are considering other options, including travelling around the Cape - even though such a move would extend the trip by 40 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eIn fiscal year 2008, Egypt earned five (b) billion US dollars in canal fees - up from 4.6 (b) billion US dollars the previous year - making it the country's third largest revenue generator after tourism and remittances from expatriate workers.\u003cbr/\u003eBut for Egypt, a country of 76 (m) million where 20 percent live on just two US dollars a day, even a slight dip in canal revenue could have a devastating affect on the economy - especially at a time when the global economic meltdown is sure to hamper the country's vast tourism industry.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, Egypt has urged the international community to strengthen its anti-piracy efforts in the Gulf of Aden, without raising the possibility of adding ships from its 20-thousand member navy to the fight.\u003cbr/\u003eFadel on Tuesday said Arab countries ringing the Red Sea should boost efforts to increase security in the region. \u003cbr/\u003eEven before the latest soar in piracy, the Canal, which Egypt nationalised in 1956, was seeing a small decline in revenue in recent months, mostly due to a decreasing demand for shipped goods.\u003cbr/\u003eIn September, revenues dropped slightly by about five (m) million US dollars compared to August. \u003cbr/\u003eTo compensate, Egypt has taken a few steps to try to boost traffic through the Canal, including decreasing its fees for dry cargo ships, Fadel said.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile speaking in Athens on Monday, Egypt's Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid added his concerns saying all measures would be taken to address the problem.\u003cbr/\u003eRachid said he believed this would be an international effort.\u003cbr/\u003eWarships from NATO, the US Navy, and a coalition of other nations are patrolling the vital area to secure a safe shipping corridor to the Suez.\u003cbr/\u003eRachid said that a few outlaws could not decide \"how world trade will be impacted.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe area has seen 95 pirate attacks this year with 39 ships hijacked, including a huge Saudi supertanker loaded with 100 (m) million US dollars worth of crude oil. \u003cbr/\u003eFifteen ships with nearly 300 crew are still in the hands of Somali pirates.\u003cbr/\u003eRachid said it was unlikely that the problem could spread north from the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea.\u003cbr/\u003eThe minister also voiced fears that the global economic crisis could hit tourism, a major earner for Egypt.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also suggested that countries, like Greece and Egypt, work on regional solutions in overcoming the economic
