A pair of Thai giant...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eRaising the perfect orchid is a labour of love.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 8th annual Siam Paragon Royal Orchid Paradise is a celebration of the delicate plants, often associated with Thailand, which come in a range of shapes and hues. \u003cbr/\u003eA pair of Thai giant gatekeepers intricately adorned with small flowers and orchids stand guard next to a giant gate with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, seal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe display represents Thailand opening its doors to welcome the ASEAN nations to experience the beauty of Thai orchids at the 8th Siam Paragon Royal Orchid Paradise which opened Wednesday (26th November 2014) in Bangkok.\u003cbr/\u003eThe annual event is organised to promote orchids as a national icon, to encourage young Thais to take an interest in orchid cultivation and to stimulate the economy as Banchar Chanttadilok, is the Group General Manager with the Siam Paragon Retail Company Limited explains. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This event aims at boosting the economy of the orchid industry in Thailand and ASEAN as the trading value of orchids in ASEAN is worth around 1 billion baht (about US$31.25 million) per year.  In addition, we also want to express to other countries how beautiful our orchids are.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 1500 orchid plants with hundreds of thousands of individual orchid blossoms are part of the main exhibit this year, including several species from neighbouring ASEAN countries like Malaysia, the Philippines and Cambodia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe colours range from the subtle - ivory and light pink - to the dramatic -- deep purple and bright yellow. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year also marks the first time the exhibit showcases the best selected orchids from each province around Thailand, including four new orchid species found in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the winners is Teerawee Konguthaikulm, who won for his Coelogyne Rochussenii, which is a combination between a Thai and Malaysian orchid species. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Every strand of my orchids has blossomed at the same time. It is very rare to be having this, and it also has sweet scent that comes out,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eBoonserm Pumploenpit won for his Dendrobium Rung Kamol Vejvaurt, a combination between two local species.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This species usually blooms only on the top, but we were able to make it bloom from the top down to the middle of the orchid stalk,\" he explains. \u003cbr/\u003eKate de Jude, an Australian tourist visiting the show is huge fan of the flowers. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I just love orchids, yes. They're beautiful, they're amazing flowers.
