I am among my comrades, my people, the Kurdish population," says the former soldier-turned-tailor.
He's even a supporter of the region's biggest party - the Kurdistan Democratic Party (PDK).
"I am here today seeking a safe haven. And I am ready to do whatever they ask me. Even if they ask me to hold a weapon and fight. I am with them until death," he says.
Mastkalo is ready to embrace his new home, even as his former home lies in turmoil.
Perched on Turkey's border, Kobani, also known by its Arab name Ayn Arab, has been besieged for weeks by IS fighters.
Kobani is now a ghost town: the United Nations estimates that fewer than 700 of its 60-thousand residents remain as its people flee to safety in Turkey.
Many, like Mastkalo and his family, are choosing to travel further afield to the Kurdish region of Iraq, to be with their fellow Kurds.
The President of Iraq's northern Kurdish region, Masoud Barzani, has opened the border for thousands of Kurdish refugees from Syria to legally enter the Kurdish region of Iraq and to provide them with shelter.
Naif Mohammed Abdullah, who is a field operator for the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), says incoming refugees are no longer considered illegal.
The refugees enter Iraq at the Ibrahim Khalil border crossing, from where they are transported in buses to several refugee camps in northern Iraq.
The operation is a tightly organised cooperation between the Kurdish Regional Government, the IOM and the United Nations' refugee agency, UNHCR.
Every single refugee entering the region is registered. Abdullah counts the number of refugees that come in every day.
"The formal number of refugees so far is 8,366. But we don't know today's number yet. I don't know the exact number. After registration we will know today's number and the figure will be added to the 8,366," he explains.
He later says that 931 refugees crossed today.
The weary travellers are provided with warm food, a "gift from heaven," according to Mastkalo.
In the past days he says he has only been able to provide his family with biscuits, not enough to fill an empty stomach.
"I'm very hungry. It has been two days. It's almost 24 hours, if not 40 hours since (eating) yesterday," he says as he greedily eats his rice and chicken.
Now it's time to hit the road once again. Another long journey awaits Mastkalo and his family.
In a bus decorated with the Kurdish flag they leave Ibrahim Khalil, bound for the Basirma refugee camp in Harir, Irbil province.
The 230 kilometre (142 miles) journey, along poor roads and in bad weather, gives Mastkalo plenty of time to reflect on his two weeks in Turkey.
Like many Syrian Kurds, Mastkalo is frustrated by Ankara's failure to aid Kurdish fighters in their battle against Islamic State extremists in his hometown of Kobani.
"I even refuse to eat the food of Turkey. They attack my family, my brothers and my people and you expect me to eat their food?"
Mastkalo says that at a recent protest against the Turkish government forces used teargas to disperse the demonstrators.
Kurds in Turkey accuse the government of standing idly by while Syrian Kurds are being slaughtered in the besieged town across the border.
For its part, Ankara views Kurdish fighters in Syria as loyal to what Turkish officials regard as an extension of the group known as the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK.
That group has waged a 30-year insurgency in Turkey and is designated a "terrorist" group by the US and NATO.
Day slowly drifts into night and after six hours on the road Mastkalo and his family are exhausted.
"I'm very tired. My head is aching, really aching," the 54-year-old says as the bus stops to refuel.
Two hours later the bus finally pulls up at the Basirma refugee camp in the pouring rain.
Mastkalo doesn't let this dampen his spirits.
"We are now under the responsibility of competent authorities, these guys I mean. And we have no idea where they will place us or where we will sleep. We are under the mercy of the Lord and these people," the refugee beams.
The Basirma camp, in Irbil province, was set up by UNHCR in 2013 for Syrian refugees escaping the civil war. This is the Mastkalo family's new home for now.
They will spend the night in a building at the camp, before being allocated their tent tomorrow.
The future is uncertain for Mastkalo, his family and many like him. But for now - as they pray for peace in the region - they are just happy to have a roof, even if it is canvass, over their heads.
AP Television
Ibrahim Khalil border crossing, Kurdish region - 16 October, 2014
1.
