Wide of supporters sitting and chanting\u003cbr/\u003ePresident Robert Mugabe won an overwhelming victory in Zimbabwe's widely criticised, violence-wracked runoff election, according to official results on Sunday.\u003cbr/\u003eMoments after the results were announced on state TV, a marching band opened inauguration ceremonies for Mugabe at his official residence.\u003cbr/\u003eReporters had been called to State House for the ceremony even before the results were announced.\u003cbr/\u003eZimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe was the only candidate in Friday's run-off election after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out, citing violence against his supporters and the impossibility of running a normal election campaign due to harrassment and arrests.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Zimbabwean journalist Heidi Holland, President Robert Mugabe is convinced that he was given the presidency \"by God.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't think he is clinically mad. He did genuinely, I think, want to be the saviour of his people, the liberator of an oppressed nation,\" said Holland.\u003cbr/\u003eBorn in 1924, Mugabe has held power in Zimbabwe since the former British colony gained independence from London in 1980. \u003cbr/\u003eThe historic signing of the Lancaster House agreement brought an end to the civil war there and paved the way for elections.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Lancaster House agreement had protected the position of Zimbabwe's white inhabitants, who were allocated 20 seats in parliament.   \u003cbr/\u003eLand reform, specifically the redistribution of white-owned land to landless black peasants, was promised but was delayed in order to smoothe the transition to majority rule.   \u003cbr/\u003eIn elections held in 1980, Mugabe's ZANU party (Zimbabwe African National Union party) initially built a coalition with Joshua Nkomo whose ZAPU (Zimbabwe African People's Union)  forces had opposed the colonial government.  \u003cbr/\u003eMugabe was installed as prime minister, and the nation was renamed.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn an effort to consolidate his power, in 1987 Mugabe had the constitution revised, replacing the office of prime minister with that of president, which combines the posts of head of state and head of government.   \u003cbr/\u003eHolland met Mugabe for an exclusive two-and-a-half hour interview in November, 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eHer subsequent book, \"Dinner with Mugabe\", is now being seen as a psychological profile on a man that, in the eyes of many, is stealing an election and imposing a violent political crackdown on the people of Zimbabwe, having wrought economic ruin on the country.\u003cbr/\u003eHolland explained that an Anglo-Irish priest, who was Mugabe's headteacher, told Mugabe's mother that her 10-year-old son \"was going to be a great leader\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"So, a week ago you heard Mugabe saying: 'Nobody except God will unseat me, because God put me here' do you remember that? Well, the fact is that Mugabe is prone to making outlandish statements but that actually comes from his heart, I think,\" said Holland.\u003cbr/\u003eTsvangirai's party and its allies won control of parliament in the election on March 29, dislodging Mugabe's party for the first time since independence in 1980. \u003cbr/\u003eElection officials said Tsvangirai also received the most votes for president but less than 50 percent, forcing the run-off.\u003cbr/\u003eTsvangirai withdrew from the run-off on Sunday leaving Mugabe the only candidate. \u003cbr/\u003eTsvangirai's name remained on the ballot, however, as electoral officials said Tsvangirai announced his withdrawal too late.\u003cbr/\u003eAs polls closed at 7:00 p.m. (1700 GMT) on Friday, officials at one Harare station said they hadn't seen a voter for several hours. \u003cbr/\u003eRoaming bands of government supporters reportedly heckled, harassed and threatened people into voting, in an election widely criticised by the international community. \u003cbr/\u003eResidents said they were forced to vote by threats of violence or arson from President Mugabe's supporters, who searched for anyone without an ink-stained finger, the telltale sign that they had cast a ballot.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He now knows that his own people don't want him and I think that what is going on now is that, even though it seems that his condemned the election, in which Mugabe was the only candidate. \u003cbr/\u003eIt followed a campaign during which opposition supporters were the target of brutal state-sponsored violence that left more than 80 dead and forced some 200,000 to flee their homes, human rights groups said.\u003cbr/\u003eForeign ministers from the Group of Eight industrialised nations condemned Zimbabwe's election on Friday and said they deplored the use of intimidation and violence by the country's authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ministers said they would not accept any result that did not reflect the \"will of said on the eve of the vote he was open to talks, but pressed ahead with the election, apparently hoping a victory would give him leverage at the negotiating table. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it now appears
