Wide shot crowd on a street\u003cbr/\u003eA human rights group has accused Nepal's Maoist rebels of recruiting child soldiers in their attacks on government targets and troops. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the village of Khanikhola, 32 kilometres (almost 20-miles) from the Nepalese capital, Katmandu, two 11-year-olds are learning to live under the shadow of a gun. \u003cbr/\u003eMahesh and Amit Bhandari from Khanikhola village say they have heard many stories of school children being kidnapped by the rebels and turned into child-soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Yes, we feel scared,\" they said. And their fears are not unfounded, according to human rights organisations.\u003cbr/\u003eAnna Neistat of the New York-based Human Rights Watch told reporters in Kathmandu recently that thousands of children were abducted during a cease-fire, which the rebels withdrew from early this year. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The Maoist claims about not using children for military purposes are simply not true. All of these children were used as cooks, porters, some were trained for medical corps and some received military training,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eHuman Rights Watch said representatives of its organisation had spent three weeks studying the situation in several parts of Nepal, including areas affected by rebel violence.\u003cbr/\u003eNeistat said they interviewed child soldiers apparently used by the Maoist rebels who were now in government detention. She said many were forced to join the Maoists.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most of these kids who were from far Western region of Nepal were forcibly recruited - only a few said they joined voluntarily,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rebels have repeatedly denied claims that they recruit child soldiers to fight the government troops. However, both international and local human rights groups have accused them of using children.\u003cbr/\u003eHuman Rights Watch also claims that civilian casualties have soared again in Nepal this year following a drastic reduction during the last four months of 2005 when the rebels observed a unilateral cease-fire.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group blamed both sides for the casualties, citing indiscriminate aerial bombardment by the army of civilian areas, and use by the rebels of houses, schools, and public spaces.\u003cbr/\u003eSam Zarifi, also from Human Rights Watch said the conflict had moved into civilian areas.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Our biggest area of concern is the RNA's (Royal Nepal Army's) use of helicopters and specifically the use of explosives, 81 millimetre mortars dropped from helicopters in clashes with Maoists,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eLast week, a United Nations official said serious human rights abuses continued in Nepal including the unexplained disappearances of more than 300 people and the army's use of helicopter gunships to fire indiscriminately at targets in civilian areas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rebels, who say they are inspired by Chinese revolutionary Mao Zedong, have fought for a decade to establish a communist government in Nepal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe insurgency has claimed nearly 13-thousand
