And we gathered them all together, as you can see in this space, to tell the story of all the related nations of the Commonwealth."
Power, according to the curators, refers to a number of qualities and dimensions, including the power vested in a garment by virtue of the excellence of technique in its making and the value of the materials from which it is made.
These include cloths of high aesthetic value which were traded around the world.
There is a particular focus on ceremonial cloths used by indigenous communities from Canada, New Zealand and Australia including a possum skin cloak made by Australian Aboriginal elders and gifted to the former Lord Mayor of Melbourne.
Other ceremonial cloths include a rare painted and printed Kalamkari created by Gujrati masters dated to 14th to 16th century. This sacred heirloom from Gujrat was traded to the Toraja region of Sulawesi in Indonesia.
Organisers say the concept of power in textiles also arises from the significance of the wearer - like the distinctive dress choices of major historical leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Nelson Mandela and Queen Victoria.
These pieces signify political power or political positions of resistance and independence.
There's Gandhi's shawl symbolising India's freedom fighters, Nelson Mandela's shirt and Queen Victoria's gloves representing the centralised power of the Commonwealth.
"The gloves that were worn by Queen Victoria, the curator said, we needed a piece that related to Queen Victoria, because she is so significant in the Commonwealth, so, we tried a number of museum collections, then we ended up talking to someone at the Victoria and Albert Museum who then put me in touch with a dealer in London who helped us. So, it's complicated, but very rewarding," says exhibitions coordinator, Helen Rayment.
'Power' may also arise from the spiritual, mystical or symbolic cultural status of the garment or cloth, like the clothing of a shaman, say the curators.
The Makishi masquerade mask and dress of Zambia is an embodiment of ancestral spirits.
Ritually powerful cloths are represented here by the spectacular Yoruba masquerade costumes from Nigeria.
And finally, there is the power of celebration as seen in costumes designed for events like carnivals and festivals - like the white costume from Trinidad and Tobago.
The exhibits also include a Moghul Brocade hanging, exquisite Kashmir shawls, an extraordinary pugree turban of a Baluchi Chief and robes of honour from Pakistan.
The Crafts Museum has contributed a gold embroidered late Moghul Khilat, robe of honour and turban along with Neelambari and koniya worked Jamdanis of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Drawn from major museums and private collections from around the globe and covering all five continents, the exhibition presents a selection of key historical and contemporary works, many of which have never before been viewed publicly.
The exhibition ends on October 20.

<div
