Various of Buckenara gardening\u003cbr/\u003eA new drug has doctors hopeful that millions of people at risk of lethal blood clots may soon get easier treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 900,000 people a year around the world suffer a vein clot, and nearly 300,000 die globally. \u003cbr/\u003eUntil recently, the only option for those who develop clots after surgery was a series of painful injections to stop the clots from reforming.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now scientists are hoping a new pill will help cut fatalities.\u003cbr/\u003eFormer Australian Rules Footballer Gary Buckenara injured his knee while playing for Melbourne club Hawthorn in the 1983 Grand Final.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing surgery he developed a blood clot, and has since been forced to take regular precautions to avoid further life-threatening complications.\u003cbr/\u003eBuckenara says that every time he goes into hospital for an operation, he has to undergo regular injections to prevent another clot.\u003cbr/\u003eBlood clots are part of the body's natural healing process. \u003cbr/\u003eBlood thickens and forms a protective scab around an injury before eventually dissolving.  \u003cbr/\u003eClots can kill quickly if they move up to the lungs. \u003cbr/\u003eRecent estimates suggest that about 900,000 people a year suffer a vein clot, and nearly 300,000 die globally. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Harry Gibbs from the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia says blood clots are one of the most serious causes of death in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery year up to twenty-thousand Australians who have had surgery develop the life-threatening clots. About five thousand a year die because of the condition. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Dr Gibbs the death rate is higher than that of breast or bowel cancer in Australia. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors manage blood clots by attempting to prevent them from forming in the first place. Patients are given a series of injections to help thin the blood. \u003cbr/\u003eResearchers believe many patients don't get the treatment they need through injections.\u003cbr/\u003eNow doctors have a new method at their disposal.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medication called rivaroxaban (brand name Xarelto) works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for causing clots.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Gibbs hopes the tablet could provide a breakthrough in blood clot prevention.\u003cbr/\u003eStudies have shown it's safe and effective, and the drug has also been approved by the European Commission for use in the prevention of blood clots during hip and knee replacement surgery.\u003cbr/\u003eIn June this year  the New England Journal of Medicine published two studies of more than 7,000 knee and hip replacement recipients who received either a daily rivaroxaban pill or today's standard injections. \u003cbr/\u003ePill users were less likely to suffer fatal and nonfatal vein clots. Bleeding and other side effects were similar with both drugs. \u003cbr/\u003eDr Gibbs believes that the tablet treatment could also be more effective than the injection, as well as being more convenient.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd patients like Buckenara agree that a pill is a much easier option than having to face the needle.\u003cbr/\u003eKeyword medical-
