Alexander Nikitin was accused of spying after he...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eRussian/Nat \u003cbr/\u003eA retired Russian naval officer charged with treason appeared in court on Tuesday, beginning one of Russia's most controversial court cases since the fall of the Soviet Union.  \u003cbr/\u003eAlexander Nikitin was accused of spying after he became involved with a Norwegian environmental group called Bellona. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a pamphlet for Bellona, Nikitin criticised Russia's nuclear Arctic fleet for causing environmental damage. \u003cbr/\u003eFormer submarine captain, Alexander Nikitin has many supporters.  \u003cbr/\u003eNot just amongst Russia's democratic thinkers, human rights activists and legal buffs, but also throughout the international community.\u003cbr/\u003eHe has been called Russia's number one prisoner of conscience and whether or not he gets a fair trial will weigh heavily on Russia's image.\u003cbr/\u003eAs he arrived in court on Tuesday, Nikitin greeted supporters. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said he was as anxious as could be expected, under the circumstances. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Yes of course I am worried about the outcome of the case but this is normal for any person who has to go through such a case.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Alexander Nikitin, Former naval officer accused of spying\u003cbr/\u003eThe case began when Nikitin, acting as an environmentalist, co-authored a report released by the Norwegian ecological group which criticised and exposed environmental abuses by the Russian Navy regarding the disposal of nuclear waste.\u003cbr/\u003eThe report pinpointed Russia's northern submarine fleet as the main culprit behind the  pollution.\u003cbr/\u003eNikitin claimed the situation could lead to a nuclear catastrophe.\u003cbr/\u003e18 percent of the world's nuclear reactors are situated in the fleet.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Bellona report was widely distributed and even now is available on the internet -- but Russia's prosecutors say it contained classified information.\u003cbr/\u003eArrested nearly three years ago, Nikitin spent 11 long months in a tortuous prison cell.   \u003cbr/\u003eOnly now he is getting his day in court.\u003cbr/\u003eThe domestic arm of the former K-G-B - the Federal Security Service (F-S-B) -  will attempt to send Nikitin to prison for 20 years on what have been widely regarded as trumped-up charges.\u003cbr/\u003eNikitin, his lawyers and human rights experts deny the charges. \u003cbr/\u003eThey maintain the Bellona report is general information, basic environmental facts, and that it should be open to anyone interested.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the first four days of trial the court will discuss the defence motions and hear the prosecution's case.\u003cbr/\u003eNikitin, does have the stakes stacked against him -- Russia's court is traditionally tipped in favour of the prosecution.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd the F-S-B is still so closely connected to the government, that many wonder if Nikitin has a real chance at a fair trial.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Nikitin remains positive.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am feeling quite well, the atmosphere is as expected, and we are ready to work.  We  do not feel any particular aggression from the judge. But that does not mean we will take it easy.  We have a plan and we have a reaction to anything that they will present us with.
