The toilet pan here has a closable sealable lid, which contains seals which can seal onto the ceramic pan.  So the user uses the pan, in the normal way, closes the lid like that which locks. We then press the flush button and the air displacement unit here sends air into the pan, the air cannot escape so it pushes the waste out of the toilet and into the drainage system.\"\u003cbr/\u003e5. SOUNDBITE (English) Garry Moore, Managing Director, Propelair :\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is very effective at flushing on those low volumes (of water) because we actually use air to evacuate the pans, so we don't suffer from the same problems of not having the water to evacuate the pan. Because we empty the whole contents of the trap it is very very hygienic and this allows all of the waste to go out and then the trap is refilled with clean water. The air moving out of the pan also takes any contaminated airborne aerosol out with it into the drainage system.  So those three aspects; the high contaminate removal, the very low aerosol and the easy to clean, rimless design make it a very, very hygienic toilet.\"\u003cbr/\u003e8. It comes in shapes and forms but the idea of making your own home into an eco-home over time - it is about getting enough insulation into your roof,  if you are over 60 you can get free insulation.  It is about draught stripping, it doesn't cost much. It is about making sure that you have got good shading on the windows that are making your house overheat.  Everybody has to begin this future-proofing now. So you just get a plan, it might be over ten years - you change that window for that really good window that's the one you get the cold draughts through or you out in the solar hot water first that you can afford maybe five years you put ina  bit of solar electric system in as well.  But everybody has to get a plan on how they are going to cut back their bills and how they are going to increasingly run their lives on renewable energy.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. toilets.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest technology was on display at the Bathroom and Kitchen Expo in London.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the Bathroom and Kitchen Expo in London a range of bathrooms were on display - from hi-tech to the most glamorous.\u003cbr/\u003eBut those that attracted a lot of attention were part of the Future Technology range - the bathrooms, and more specifically, toilets of the future.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is the Propelair toilet, which flushes with a little bit of water and a lot of air.\u003cbr/\u003eThe managing director of the company, Garry Moore explains how the toilet works.\u003cbr/\u003eUsing pieces of test faeces made from blue plastic, Moore shows how the toilet flushes and takes the waste into the drainage system with displaced air rather than water.\u003cbr/\u003eThe air flush system was five years in the planning and is still at prototype stage.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe toilet uses displaced air to move waste from the toilet pan through the drainage system.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is an energy saving toilet that only uses 1.5 litres of water per flush instead of the usual nine litres, according to Moore.\u003cbr/\u003eMoore says the toilet has a number of advantages over traditional water-flush toilets.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother toilet on display is the Hervy Silent, a silent function toilet.\u003cbr/\u003eInvented in New Zealand, the Hervy Silent uses only 2.5 litres for a full flush and 1.5 litres for a half flush.\u003cbr/\u003eAs well as saving water the toilet flush is also silent.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Susan Roaf is a professor of Sustainable Architecture.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says toilets such as these, along with other energy efficiency modifications to a home, are a necessary part of future housing.\u003cbr/\u003eBut despite
