Wide of Montvalon talking\u003cbr/\u003eNicolas Sarkozy and Segolene Royal have advanced to a runoff for France's presidency, presenting voters with a fundamental left-right choice between a conservative who could push his anxious nation toward painful change and a socialist who would be the country's first female leader. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter Sunday's first round election, Royal was the first woman to get so close to the helm of this major European economic, military and diplomatic power. \u003cbr/\u003eThe campaign was marked by suspense, surprise and unusually dynamic candidates who lured voters to the ballot box in near record numbers. \u003cbr/\u003eSarkozy has the advantage heading into the May 6 runoff. \u003cbr/\u003eResults from the Interior Ministry early on Monday, based on all polling stations except those French voting in embassies overseas, had Sarkozy in first place with 31.1 percent, followed by Royal with 25.8 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eTurnout was huge at 84.6 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eSupporters of Sarkozy and Socialist Segolene Royal were celebrating their candidates' triumph on Sunday and early into Monday morning, after the announcements were made.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the headquarters for Nicolas Sarkozy, Frederic, a young Sarkozy supporter said:\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are very satisfied, very happy. We are going to start campaigning for the second round, full of hope and energy.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnother young supporter said that she was very pleased that the conservative candidate had made it past the first round of voting and is hoping for an election victory when France goes to the polls again on the 6th of May.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'd like him to win very much, because I think he has a lot of qualities and assets,\" she said. \"But every one is free to have their own ideas, the French people will have the last word.\"\u003cbr/\u003eRoyal's score was the highest for a Socialist since President Francois Mitterrand in 1988. But she could struggle to make up the gap with Sarkozy in round two. \u003cbr/\u003eCandidates to her left together scored about 11 percent. \u003cbr/\u003eThey immediately swung behind her after their elimination, but their votes alone will not be enough to put Royal in power.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite the challenges ahead supporters gathered at Royal's Socialist headquarters were celebrating their candidates first round result. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think Segolene Royal has won a great victory tonight, she is going to win another great one in two weeks. Segolene Royal is going to be the first woman to be President of the French Republic,\" one Royal supporter told AP Television.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Melle, Royal's hometown, most supporters expressed optimism over the forthcoming second round.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Sego will win. undecided on what headline should run in Monday's edition.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the paper prepared to print its first edition, packed with election news, deputy editor Dominique de Montvalon said Sarkozy
