Wide of briefing
Unchallenged by the army, Iranian-backed Hezbollah routed Sunnis loyal to the US-allied government and seized control of large parts of Beirut's Muslim sector on Friday, proving it is the most powerful force in Lebanon.
The move dramatically strengthened the Shiite militant group's hand in bitter political battles over the country's future.
At one point, about 100 Hezbollah militants wearing matching camouflage uniforms and carrying assault rifles marched down the city's main commercial street in a display of power meant to show the government who's in charge.
But as Hezbollah gunmen celebrated in the capital's empty streets it was clear that the show-of-force would have wide implications for Lebanon and the entire Mideast.
Lebanon's army largely stood aside as the Shiite militiamen scattered their opponents and occupied large parts of the capital's Muslim sector - a sign of how tricky Lebanon's politics have become.
In one instance, the army stood aside as Shiite militiamen burned the building of the newspaper of their main Sunni rival - acting only to evacuate people and then allow firefighters later to put out the blaze.
Meanwhile, in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre, tens of Shiite Amal Militants attacked Shiite authority headquarters.
The Shiite Dar Al-Iftaa compound, which includes administrative offices and a mosque, is headed by pro-majority Shiite cleric Ali Al-Ameen.
Al-Ameen is well known for criticising Hezbollah.
The army has pledged to keep the peace but not take sides in the long political deadlock - which pits Shiite Hezbollah and a handful of allies, including the Amal party and some Christian groups, against the US-backed government, which includes Christian and Sunni Muslims.
Hezbollah's power was demonstrated dramatically on Friday morning when it forced the TV station affiliated to the party of Lebanon's top Sunni lawmaker, Saad Hariri, off the air.
Gunmen also set the offices of the party's newspaper, Al-Mustaqbal, on fire in the coastal neighbourhood of Ramlet el-Bayda.
Later in the afternoon, anti-government gunmen loyal to a pro-Syrian group attacked and set on fire a two-story building where Hariri's Future TV have their archives.
The building, in the western neighbourhood of Rawche, is about 100 meters (110 yards) from the Saudi embassy.
The unrest virtually shut down Lebanon's international airport and closed many major highways.
The seaport also was closed, leaving one land route to Syria as Lebanon's only link to the outside world.
Meanwhile, pro-government protestors blocked Al-Masnaa crossing point between Lebanon and Syria in Bekaa Valley, east of Beirut in retaliation.
The road blockade caused a shortage in supplies, especially bread and food as people gathered in queues outside bakeries.
Heavy gunfire erupted in the predominantly southern port city of Sidon, Hariri's hometown, near one of the offices of the leader late on Friday but the circumstances were unclear.
The gunfire came after pro-government and opposition supporters clashed in the town.
AP Television footage showed Lebanese Army Soldiers trying to keep supporters from the two sides apart.
Lebanese National News Agency also said that sporadic gunfire was heard in several areas of the main northern city of Tripoli.
It was Lebanon's worst sectarian fighting in more than a decade and a grim harkening back to its devastating 1975-90 civil war.
That war left Beirut divided into two main sectors, one predominantly Muslim and the other mainly Christian.
At least 15 people have died in three days of violence.
Hours after the takeover, however, Hezbollah fighters began withdrawing from streets they had occupied and Lebanese troops began moving into some neighbourhoods.
Others remained on street corners across the area they control as the fighting began to ease.
The pullback signalled Hezbollah did not intend a lasting takeover of the Sunni Muslim parts of Beirut.
They refrained from attacking any government buildings, banks, or state institutions.
Hezbollah and allied gunmen steered away from government buildings and made no attempt to advance toward the city's Christian sector.
Christian neighbourhoods were peaceful, with troops deployed along the former old civil war demarcation line.
Yet the Hezbollah show-of-force was certain to both strengthen its own political position and deeply worry a Middle East and Western world nervous about Iran's influence and intentions in the region.
The Western-backed government and Hezbollah-led opposition have been deadlocked in a power struggle for 17 months over control of the government.
The political crisis has its roots in allegations of Syrian and Iranian interference in Lebanon.
Hezbollah and its allies bolted out of the Cabinet 17 months ago and since then, Prime Minister Fuad Saniora has consistently refused their demands for veto power in a future administration.
Hezbollah, in turn, has besieged downtown Beirut with a sit-in, and has blocked the election of a president in parliament, leaving the country without a head of state since November.
Sporadic street clashes had broken out in the last year.
