There's no publicity any  publisher could possibly do in addition to what publicity the book had received already  without us asking for us or prompting it or doing anything to incite such a response -  nothing at all.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Frank Truemper, Chief Editor at Siedlerverlag\u003cbr/\u003eWriting about such an emotive issue inevitably attracts fierce criticism from those who  disagree with Goldhagen.\u003cbr/\u003eBut German publishers Siedlerverlag responded by saying most of the criticism seemed  not to be based on the book itself, but on rumours and excerpts.\u003cbr/\u003e\"As you can imagine with such a controversial book there was also very very fierce  critique, and even slander I would say of the book, which to some extent sometimes  gave the impression at least of not being fully based on the knowledge of the book as a  whole, but more looking at excerpts or very quick reading in paragraphs only, I would  say.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Frank Truemper, Chief Editor at Siedlerverlag\u003cbr/\u003eMost historians have rejected Goldhagen's theories - citing lack of evidence.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a spokesperson for the Jewish Cultural Society says the book breaks new ground  in its interpretations of the Holocaust.\u003cbr/\u003eShe believes the German people have responded predictably in the breaking of an old  taboo. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They broke the taboo, and the taboo was that here are the good boys and there are the  bad boys, they are the victims and the bad boys are now the good boys and a few have  been persecuted or have been in jail and a few are still walking around.  But somehow  the world was put into order in the last 50 years and here he comes, this young man,  and he says 'Stop, you left something out - you left out the people who did it, you left  out a whole population'.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Irene Runge, Jewish Cultural Society spokeswoman\u003cbr/\u003eThe author argues in the book that Nazi ideology was not the engine that drove the  mass slaughter of Jews - but a deeply rooted form of anti-Semitism peculiar to  Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eSome disagree with him, however, believing instead that the inflammatory book serves  no real purpose in adding to the 50-year old debate.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is not a helpful book.
