Mexicans honour their dead on...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003e  Mayan communities in Mexico are observing the Day of the Dead holiday with rituals that include cleaning the bones of the dearly departed and bringing live music, food, candles and flowers to their tombs.\u003cbr/\u003e  Mexicans honour their dead on 1 November and 2 November. \u003cbr/\u003e  On Thursday, dozens of Mayan indigenous people living in the village of Pomuch on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula devoted their time to cleaning the bones of deceased relatives.\u003cbr/\u003e  Pomuch and a handful of other Mayan communities are believed to be the only places in the country where people clean the bones of the dead.\u003cbr/\u003e  Relatives use paintbrushes to clean the bones before returning them to wooden boxes.\u003cbr/\u003e  Cemetery employee Bonifacio Tun Tuz charges 1.50 US dollars to clean the bones for families who don't have time and to replace the embroidered handkerchiefs used to wrap each set of remains.\u003cbr/\u003e  \"This is being done to put mantles inside the wooden boxes, clean the bones and put everything back correctly, as it should be,\" Tun Tuz said on Thursday. \u003cbr/\u003e  Modern-day Maya bury their dead in coffins. \u003cbr/\u003e  But after three or four years, they remove the bodies, dry the now-separated bones in the sun and scrub them clean with a soft cloth or small paintbrushes.\u003cbr/\u003e  Although no one knows precisely when it began, the custom is believed to date back to the Mayan cultures in the pre-Hispanic era.\u003cbr/\u003e  For days before and weeks after the Day of the Dead celebrations, surviving family members put flowers and light votive candles in front of the boxes, which are left open to view.\u003cbr/\u003e  A more common way to celebrate Day of Dead is by having meals, songs and prayers both at home and at cemeteries. \u003cbr/\u003e  Dozens of people spent Thursday night at the tombs of their loved ones at a cemetery in the city of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlan in Oaxaca.\u003cbr/\u003e  Musicians performed live music while relatives gathered around the tombs eating and drinking.\u003cbr/\u003e  They also made offerings to the dead such as flowers, food and candles.\u003cbr/\u003e  \"We prepare for this very special day to come and be with our dead at their tombs. We prepare from the morning and in the days before we came to decorate the tombs,\" said Antonio Gudino, who visited the tomb of a deceased relative at the cemetery.\u003cbr/\u003e  The Day of the Dead holiday dates back to pre-Hispanic observances dating hundreds of years old, and to an Aztec festival in honour of Mictecacihuatl or the Queen of Mictlan (the underworld).\u003cbr/\u003e  Mictecacihuatl is believed to keep watch over the bones of the dead while Mictlantecuhtli, her husband, was the god of the dead and king of the Mictlan.\u003cbr/\u003e  Pomuch, Campeche - 31 October 2013 \u003cbr/\u003e  1.
