And tenofovir was put into a gel like KY jelly and was put into an applicator. This is specifically for women to use in the genital tract. So we advised women to use the gel up to 12 hours before they had sex, or thought they were going to have sex, and up to 12 hours after they had sex, but not more than two of these gels, applicators, in a 24-hour period.\"\u003cbr/\u003e10. Now this is what's called a proof of concept study, that means this idea that you can put an anti-retroviral into gel, the women can use it as we advise them to use it, can work preventing HIV, can work in preventing herpes.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. Woman tasting anti-HIV gel \u003cbr/\u003eA promising anti-AIDS gel, developed with the help of South African research will change the nature of the fight against the disease, it was claimed on Tuesday in Vienna.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts at the 18th International AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) conference in the Austrian capital commented on a recent study on the gel, known as a microbicide which researchers say can protect four out of ten women from HIV infection.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the study, which took place in in South Africa, the gel, spiked with the AIDS drug tenofovir, cut the risk of HIV infection by 50 percent after one year of use and 39 percent after two and half years, compared to a gel that contained no medicine.\u003cbr/\u003eAdditional results proved that the gel was effective in preventing 51 percent of genital herpes infections in women.\u003cbr/\u003eDr Antony Fauci, director of the US National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases described the data as \"significant\".\u003cbr/\u003eHe commented that the gel fulfils, \"a need in the sense of science and public health and prevention, but also a need from a sociological standpoint for a group of people who for so long have had really very little opportunity to determine their own fate, namely women, particularly women in the developing world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe study had asked nearly 900 women volunteers in rural areas around Durban to use a gel - some being dummy samples - up to 12 hours before sex and within 12 hours afterward.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the end of the 30-month trial period, 60 of the 444 women who received dummy gel were infected with HIV while only 38 of the 445 women who used the tenofovir gel were HIV-positive, reflecting a reduction of nearly 50 percent of the HIV infection rate.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, a leading researcher and co-director of the South African gel programme described the gel tests as a \"proof of concept study.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"That means this idea that you can put an anti-retroviral into gel, the women can use it as we advise them to use it, can work preventing HIV, can work in preventing herpes,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Africa, a nation of about 50 (m) million, has an estimated 5.7 (m) million people infected with HIV, more than any other country. \u003cbr/\u003eIn South Africa, one in three girls is infected with HIV by age 20, this gel could prevent 1.3 (m) million infections and 826-thousand deaths over the next two decades, Fauci calculated.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is the largest recipient of funds from PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which was launched in 2003 by then US President George W. Bush in 15 countries, 12 of them African, that bear most of the world's AIDS burden. \u003cbr/\u003ePEPFAR has helped to treat more than two (m) million Africans and supported 10 (m) million more.\u003cbr/\u003eCalifornia-based Gilead Sciences Inc., which donated the tenofovir used in the study, will allow a non-profit and a research organisation to produce the drug royalty-free for the 95 poorest countries in the world, said an official from the Gilead Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm.\u003cbr/\u003eThe biggest cost of the gel is the plastic applicator - about 32 cents -
