the Gulf drug cartel.\u003cbr/\u003eSergio Pena Mendoza, 39, is also suspected of participating in an unsuccessful plot to free an imprisoned\u003cbr/\u003eZetas leader from jail in neighbouring Guatemala, authorities told a news conference in Mexico City.\u003cbr/\u003ePena Mendoza was arrested after he tried to flee a police patrol in a stolen pickup truck with Texas plates in Reynosa.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice claim they found an assault rifle in the truck along with a stash of marijuana.\u003cbr/\u003eThe accused was paraded in front of the media at the Mexico City international airport on Saturday as police trumpeted their latest victory in the war against organised drug gangs.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities said Pena Mendoza is also suspected of killing a police official and a businessman in southern Mexico.\u003cbr/\u003eInterim Federal Police Commissioner Rodrigo Esparza said Pena Mendoza achieved the same rank in the Zetas, and was a possible replacement for, Jaime Gonzalez Duran, also known as \"the Hummer\", a founding member of the gang who was arrested in Reynosa in November.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever questioned by reporters as he was led through police installations in Mexico City, Pena Mendoza denied the accusations on Saturday claiming police had got the wrong man.\u003cbr/\u003eThe arrest is a major coup for Mexico's police force and comes as part of a nationwide crackdown on drug cartels that has grown to include more than 45,000 troops since President Felipe Calderon took office in
