Officials from eight countries were invited to the meeting, organised by the International Labour...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eEng/Thai/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eLabour representatives met in Bangkok on Wednesday to discuss the impact of Asia's financial crisis on employment. \u003cbr/\u003eOfficials from eight countries were invited to the meeting, organised by the International Labour Organisation.\u003cbr/\u003eThe meeting is the first of its kind to bring together representatives from all sectors involved in the region's financial woes.\u003cbr/\u003eThailand's Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai chaired the opening session of the three-day meeting at a Bangkok hotel. \u003cbr/\u003eMichel Hansenne, the Director General of the International Labour Organisation arranged the meeting  to discuss the high rise in unemployment facing Asia, following the financial region's crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eThe I-L-O's aim is to focus on employment and social protection issues. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also provides technical cooperation and assistance to minimise the adverse effects of the crisis, and promotes activities by members in the countries affected.   \u003cbr/\u003eThailand's Prime Minister said it was time to concentrate on getting people back into work and help those who are most disadvantaged.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e'While there have been some encouraging signs of a turnaround in many of the affected economies, including Thailand, the repercussions upon our people have yet to be fully felt, at least I'm referring to the human of social dimension of the crisis, which includes such problems as rising unemployment and increasing pressure upon our social services. The crisis has also hampered ongoing efforts to alleviate poverty as well as to provide better social protection to all sectors of society, particularly those most disadvantaged. \u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Chuan Leekpai, Thailand Prime Minister\u003cbr/\u003eDelegates are using a recently released I-L-O report as the basis for the meeting. \u003cbr/\u003eThe report concludes that Asia's economic troubles will continue in 1998 because there are inadequate policies in place now to deal with the financial crisis. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the worst-affected countries, the report says millions will lose their jobs as a result of retrenchments, especially in the areas of construction, financial services and manufacturing. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also predicts large currency devaluations will contribute to  unemployment and a fall in buying power for those who do have jobs. \u003cbr/\u003eMichel Hansenne, Director General of the ILO stressed that it was important for governments to work democratically if they're to recover from the financial crisis.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e'The contamination of market processes by politics who are also a root cause.
