So to contain the deaths or rather to control the spread of the disease, especially amongst the birds, what we've been doing is, we have been deep burying the dead carcasses of the flamingos that die. SOUNDBITE: (English) Nehemiah Rotich, Senior Programme Officer, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office:
"The water in Lake Nakuru is receding for a number of reasons. One of the reasons is that the catchment has actually been degraded over a long period of time. If you look at the forests which were on the highlands on the east and especially also the forests which were on the Mao, in particular the eastern part of Mao, you'll find that much of those forests have been cleared in the course of time. And as a result of this, the retention of water within the land has reduced tremendously in the sense that because the land has been cleared of vegetation the amount of water percolating into the soil and therefore feeding the rivers for several months of the year is very much reduced. Therefore that water is no longer readily available throughout the year to maintain a level of water within the lake itself. So that's one of the principal causes. Of course water has also been obstructed for other human uses from the drainage basin as well. And all these contribute to less water in the lake."
19. It's also thought to affect the ideal conditions that are necessary or conducive for production of the Spirulina which is the principal food of the lesser flamingos in particular."
22. Various of flamingos on lake
The flamingos which make Kenya's Lake Nakuru their home are under threat.
A report in this month's Science magazine says that thousands of birds are dying, but no direct cause has yet been found.
Researchers think a deadly bacteria might be to blame. Although the receding waters of Lake Nakuru are impacting on wildlife in the area.
Lake Nakuru in Kenya, bathed in pink and crimson as thousands of Africa's Great and Lesser flamingos flock to its waters.
But it is the Lesser Flamingos that have really made Lake Nakuru their home.
Of the world's six flamingo species (two live in Africa), they are notoriously selective in their feeding habits.
They can be distinguished by their deep red crimson bills, unlike the Greater Flamingo, which has a pink bill with a black tip.
The elegant birds feed on the abundant algae, which grow in the warm waters of Lake Nakuru.
But now the Lesser Flamingos are dying in huge numbers.
Science magazine reports that more than 30,000 flamingos have been found dead at Lake Nakuru in recent months.
At the same time the birds have been gathering in places they have never been seen before.
The researchers say that thousands of Lesser Flamingos suddenly appeared at the much smaller Kenyan lake, Lake Oloiden, in September.
Apollo Kariuki is a Senior Research Scientist with the Kenyan Wild Life Service (KWS).
He claims a bacterial infection is killing the flamingos.
Kariuki says that so far at least twenty thousand birds have died as a result of the infection.
The KWS buries the infected carcasses to try to stop the bacteria spreading.
Scientists from Berlin and Kenyatta university, who collaborated on the report in Science magazine, suspect that bacterial toxins may be the cause of many of the deaths.
They are examining bacteria that photosynthesise and emit toxins called cyanobacteria as a possible cause of the deaths.
The researchers argue that the receding water levels in the lake lead to an increase in the salinity of the water. This in turn results in a new mix of cyanobacteria, which produces lethal toxins.
Nehemiah Rotich, Senior Programme Officer with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Regional Office says the water levels in Lake Nakuru have dropped as a result of drought and bad water management for irrigation around the lake.
He says that extensive deforestation around the lake in recent years reduces the amount of water held in soil which then ends up in the lake.
Rotich says the reduction in water levels also leads to a loss of food for the flamingos.
Scientists estimate that the flamingo population at Nakuru consumes about 250,000 kilogrammes of Spirulina algae per hectare of surface area per year.
Lake Nakuru national park, on the edge of the town of Nakuru lies about 160 kilometres (99 miles) north of Nairobi.
Huge numbers of tourists visit the park each year to see more than 450 different birds species, including an estimated 1.5 (m) million flamingoes.
Lake Nakuru is one of the main attractions of Kenya's wildlife and tourism industry, which brings in nearly 300 (m) million US dollars in foreign currency each year.
Further studies of algal toxins are due to be carried out to try to clear up the mystery of the flamingo deaths, Science reports.
