Rajavi standing alongside Iranian widow and paying homage to the woman's husband, said to have been a political prisoner, executed in Iran \u003cbr/\u003eThousands gathered on Saturday in Villepinte, north of the French capital Paris, to show their support for the National Council of Resistance of Iran, the political wing of the Iranian military group MEK (Mujahedeen-e-Khalq), also known as People's Mujahedeen Organisation of Iran (PMOI).\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the rally, National Council of Resistance of Iran leader Maryam Rajavi called on the United Nations to monitor an MEK camp of disarmed fighters in Ashraf, north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, after a deadly attack there by the Iraqi army in April.\u003cbr/\u003eThe camp was installed under former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and once used as a base to battle the clerical regime across the border in Iran.  \u003cbr/\u003eIraqi officials have repeatedly called for the group to shut down the camp and move to another country.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Iraqi army attack on the enclave in April killed up to 35 people and injured hundreds.\u003cbr/\u003eRajavi said sending UN monitors to Camp Ashraf was the best short-term way to protect the 3,400 people living there.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The protection of the residents of Ashraf is necessary for the Iranian people because they are a symbol of perseverance, hope and tenacity. its list of \"terrorist organisations\". \u003cbr/\u003eThe US has labelled the MKE a \"terrorist group\" since 1997, and had been on the European Union's list of banned organisations since 2002, but the 27-nation bloc's foreign ministers removed it on January 2009 in response to a string of European court decisions that went in the group's favour.\u003cbr/\u003eThe group, which has long been at odds with Iran's many governments throughout the years, say it is dedicated to a democratic, secular government in Iran. \u003cbr/\u003eThe MEK - whose members claim to be Iran's parliament in exile -  was founded in Iran in the 1960s and helped followers of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini overthrow the US-backed Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi in 1979. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the group fell out with Khomeini, and thousands of its followers were killed, imprisoned or forced into exile. \u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, it launched a campaign of assassinations and bombings against Iran's government. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also fought alongside former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's forces during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe MEK has long tried to shed its militant la bel, despite a
