Mid shot of Miller explaining scans to patient
Laughter may be as effective as statins at conquering heart disease according to new research by doctors in America.
They''re investigating whether a hearty chuckle might one day be used to prevent heart attacks.
The research is ongoing as the world''s health leaders today (19th September 2011) hold a United Nations summit to discuss how to stop chronic illnesses like heart disease from killing about 36 million people around the world every year.
John Wallace has a long history of heart disease.
He suffered the first of his two heart attacks back in 1980 and he''s been wearing a defibrillator for the past eighteen years.
Wallace is now on medication too.
His illnesses are longstanding, but treatable and despite the many medical checkups he has to undergo, he endeavours to lead a normal life.
Wallace even plays sports including tennis, golf and volleyball, but he''s called it a day on basketball.
He and others like him may benefit from the research that''s been going on here at Maryland Medical School.
He''s being given a BART test which is a common procedure to detect cardiovascular problems.
It uses an ultrasound to capture images of the brachial artery, the main supply of blood to the left arm.
It''s been chosen because it''s not far from the heart and close to the surface of the skin.
So unlike arteries in the legs it''s easy monitor.
But unlike most hospital visits, the patient isn''t being offered drugs, or surgery.
He''s being treated to a couple of hours of fun.
To be more specific it''s his laughter that''s important.
That''s because doctors here believe laughter is seriously therapeutic.
Professor Michael Miller has been studying the effects of laughter on thirty volunteers in the last five years.
The men and women in the study were aged between thirty and seventy, but unlike Wallace they were all healthy and didn''t have a history of cardiovascular disease.
They were brought in to watch the serious dramas and the comedies on separate days.
But Miller is keen to show the effects can be measured on someone with a history of cardiovascular problems as well.
He says: "There is now some scientific evidence that supports the fact that laughter should not be taken lightly, that it really does appear to have a physiological effect. What we still don''t know is whether practicing laughter on a regular basis reduces the risk of heart attacks."
First of all Wallace is treated to the film "Kingpin" before measurements are taken of the endothelium, or inner lining of the blood vessel.
Miller says these are "very important because there are chemicals and other messengers that are sent between the bloodstream and into our various tissues and basically serves to guard against noxious chemicals, if you will and protects us".
According to Miller "if you have risk factors for heart disease, then that inner lining doesn''t function as well and the idea here is that after stress, you''re constricting the blood vessel because chemicals are produced to cause that reaction and over time those continued stressful reactions can have a damaging effect on the heart."
Once the measurements have been taken the sonographer attaches the cuff back onto Wallace''s arm and he settles down to watching the traumatic story of "Saving Private Ryan".
Again Miller measures the inner lining of the blood vessel and he''s pleased with the result.
He says: "The magnitude of the change that we have seen after experiencing a good laugh is similar to what is experienced after aerobic activity and is similar to what is experienced after taking a heart protective medication such as a statin."
Miller is hopeful that in years to come he may eventually be able to show that laughter may be an alternative to statins.
He believes this may be of help to the minority of people who suffer side effects.
But more importantly he''s keen to know whether a hearty chuckle, combined with a healthy lifestyle may help prevent heart disease.
Miller says: "The question really now is that we know that laughing appears to have a good effect on our cardiovascular system, but how does that translate into people that already have established heart disease. In other words if you take a group of people and have them laugh on a regular basis, will that potentially reduce their risk of having a heart attack, or another heart attack."
Miller is particularly pleased with Wallace''s results, because he claims that showing the films back to back has demonstrated how his arteries can open and close in a short amount of time.
Making people laugh to order is not an easy task, certainly when patients are anxious and suffering pain, but it''s something that''s interesting heart doctors.
But it''ll be many years before the medical profession can devise an alternative therapy to traditional drugs.
wacky

<div
