But for those who want to explore the centuries-old lifestyle and lesser-known cultural heritage of Bangkok,...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eTravelling in a long-tail boat along Bangkok's Chao Phraya river is a tried and tested way to see the city's historic landmarks. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for those who want to explore the centuries-old lifestyle and lesser-known cultural heritage of Bangkok, then take a trip along the backwaters to see rare and hidden gems.\u003cbr/\u003eA Sunday morning on the river in Thailand's bustling capital on a connecting labyrinth of canals is like stepping back in time. \u003cbr/\u003eThe majestic landmarks along the river give away to old wooden houses and temples on the canals.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the old days, access to these waterways, a gateway to trade, was highly coveted. Land along these canals belonged to the rich and influential.  \u003cbr/\u003eKhlong Bang Luang is one of these canals. Built in 1552, the canal was home to influential families and high-ranking government officials. Houses along the six-kilometre long waterway were well known for some of the best goldsmiths in the city. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of these wooden houses on Khlong Bang Luang was recently turned into an art gallery called \"the Artist's House\". \u003cbr/\u003eMore than a century old, the two-storey house was renovated by an art professor and photographer, Chumpon Akapantanon, and turned into a space to preserve and promote several forms of traditional Thai art. The house's highlight is a daily free Thai puppet show. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This place is in Bangkok at the heart of the city and Thailand. This sort of atmosphere along the canal is more common in the provinces but this is a part of Bangkok that feels very provincial with its traditional community preserved,\" says puppeteer Noppadol Hongseesakul. \u003cbr/\u003eEach performance begins with a ceremony to thank the teachers and the founder of this traditional Thai art form.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe story line for the shows are usually based on well-known Indian mythologies. \u003cbr/\u003eThe most popular scenes are ones depicting the Hindu Monkey God - Hanuman -- because his character is endearing to children, Noppadol says. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Usually our performances are based on the Ramayana because the story of Ramayana lends itself to show the beauty of puppeteering, which is in the coordination between the puppets and the people, \" Noppadol says. The 35-year-old puppeteer says he started performing in puppet shows about 12 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eEach puppet's hands and feet are manipulated by three masked performers who also perform a dance along with the dolls. \u003cbr/\u003eUnlike many such traditional performances, however, the shows at the Artist House are adapted to please modern audiences.  \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's the intimacy. It's the kind of culture that's very accessible. In other places, some of these performances are on stage and are inaccessible but here you see the process from the beginning from the preparation of costumes to the performance. They also interact with the audience and you see the whole process.  It's a joyful and intimate experience,\" says Narisa Koetkhangmag, who came to see the puppet show with her husband and son. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the performance, some visitors enjoy lunch at restaurants along the canal. \u003cbr/\u003eOthers opt for food and drinks sold on boats which pass by regularly. \u003cbr/\u003eThe house's owner also opens up the house's verandah to visitors who participate in art workshops and activities such as traditional mask painting and print making. \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the area is drawing more Thai and foreign visitors, it remains largely untouched by mass tourism. The traditional way of life remains the norm. \u003cbr/\u003eOn the canal's wooden walkway, Somsak Kaewpradith is cooking rice, peanuts, beans, sesame and sugarcane juice, stirring the liquid mix until it turns into a sticky paste. He is making a traditional Thai dessert called \"Krayasart\". \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's very rare now. If I stop making this, it will disappear. No one makes it anymore. I don't know if the children will continue to make it but I think they will. I don't want to abandon this because it was passed down from generations before, from the grandparents,\"  53-year-old Somsak says. \u003cbr/\u003eMany visitors take a tour of the wider area on long-tail boats. \u003cbr/\u003eA private hire for an hour costs 800 baht ($26).  Be prepared, however, because it can be noisy. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the sound of the boat engine is music to the ears of 52-year-old Somboon Krajok-iam. He's worked as a boatman here since his teens, and was born in a house along one of these very canals.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I like (living along the canal). The weather is cool. You barely need tap water.
