Mid of train passing the Gen Project
It's one of the most inhospitable places on earth, but environmentalists in the Atacama desert are successfully nurturing an oasis of crops, livestock and innovative eco projects.
The Atacama desert in Chile is one of the driest places on the planet with an average rainfall of less than a millimetre per year.
But in this desert is an oasis rising like a mirage from the sun-baked earth.
It's not where you'd expect to find vines growing - yet here they thrive.
This artificial oasis - known as the Gen Project - was created in 1985 by a team of scientists and professionals with the aim of creating a self-sufficient community in the most inhospitable environment.
According to the Gen Corporation's founder and president, Pedro Aranda, the community was born nearly three decades ago during Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship as Chile struggled through an economic downturn which saw an unemployment rates spike at higher than 30 percent.
The Gen Project was also inspired by the Israeli kibbutz.
Despite temperatures reaching highs of 32 degrees Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) and water being scarce, a group of Bolivian families have worked the land to introduce agriculture to the barren land.
Local farmers claim the weather conditions actually suit crops - such as the chard - because the winds that blow across the desert help to cool the temperatures, which would otherwise be too hot.
Located 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the coastal city of Antofagasta, Gen Project is an area of 12 hectares (30 acres), with crops of lettuce, chard, beans, spinach, tomatoes, wheat, carrots and grapes - used to make the special "Wine of the Desert".
The irrigation is a mixture of groundwater and additional water brought from the city, which is for domestic use.
Chickens, geese, rabbits and goats are also bred here.
One thing the Atacama isn't short of is sunshine and local residents use solar panels to extract as much of its energy as possible.
Eight families have self-sustainable houses in this oasis, like Blanca Gutierrez.
She says: "You have here a nice and friendly house thanks to the silence and peace of the desert, something people are usually looking for. Also, this area is not too far from the coast, so we have humidity from the Pacific Ocean plus fresh air coming from the Andes Mountains that generate a quite adequate climate to catch water from dew and fog. But at the same time, because the sun shines every day with just a few exceptions, it was logical to think about how to cook food using a handcrafted unit like this one," says Espinoza.
Another of his inventions is the fog catcher, which collects water to irrigate crops.
These nets capture the "camanchaca" - a dense fog which rolls across the desert.
A windmill made from recycled materials also provides energy to support the solar panels.
The team is also experimenting with hydrogen and bio-fuels.
Espinoza is supported by architect Raul Contreras who is looking at ways to air-condition houses in a sustainable way.
His idea is to build high inclined roofs to allow proper ventilation.
"Well, Santiago receives energy from hydroelectric plants and in other places people use diesel to climatise rooms something that would not be necessary if energy consumption."
The Gen Project is a non-profit organisation which receives funding from 27 commercial partners, tourists and occasional public donations.
However, the project's biggest challenge is attracting more young people to join the community.
Looking ahead to the future, Romina Vera - who organises permaculture workshops - invites students to learn about sustainability.
To build a classroom they are using materials found dumped in the Atacama desert.
Vera says: "Our aim with this workshop it is to show to
