getting along well, and telling their compatriots back home they were ill-advised not to come to Ukraine. \u003cbr/\u003eBut human rights activists fear that the Ukrainian government, revelling in the positive image of the nation being projected around the world, will now do even less to tackle deep-seated problems in society such as racism, intolerance towards minorities and a lack of political freedom.\u003cbr/\u003eMany fans stayed away from Euro 2012 after media reports put the spotlight on such issues in the run-up to the tournament. \u003cbr/\u003eSome politicians even boycotted the matches, to protest against the treatment of jailed Ukraine opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bad state of infrastructure and high hotel prices also proved a deterrent. \u003cbr/\u003eBut with only a week left until the final in Kiev, fans have been overwhelmingly positive about their experience. \u003cbr/\u003eThey've made their peace with high hotel prices: the beer is cheap and they've mingled well with locals.\u003cbr/\u003eEngland fan Peter Hancock said he would recommend Ukraine to anyone.\u003cbr/\u003eHe spoke as the crowd was chanting \"We do what we want\", a ditty which also included insults directed at former English footballer Sol Campbell.\u003cbr/\u003eCampbell warned fans before the start of the tournament that they might come even end up coming in a coffin because of racist violence.\u003cbr/\u003eTaking photos with fans in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk, former English football Chris Kamara offered his endorsement, calling Ukraine \"one of the most friendly places I've been to.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDisgruntled by the foreign media reports, and repeatedly denying existence of any problems in the country, local authorities quickly have embraced the mood on the streets.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday, local media reported that former Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk said he intended to file a lawsuit against the media company which produced a programme for the BBC, focusing on racism in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal entrepreneurs have also tried to take advantage of the situation, selling T-shirts with the inscription: \"Now I fear nothing, I've been to Donetsk\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"Because we had a problem with the media, we decided to make these ironic T-shirts,\" said vendor Ilya Kravchenko.\u003cbr/\u003eMaxim Butkevich, an activist with the Kiev-based No Border group that helps minorities, is not surprised that fans have felt safe in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was clear that the areas with foreign visitors would be heavily policed and that the safety of fans would be a priority, he said.\u003cbr/\u003eKiev-based activist, Ina Shevchenko also said that the image of Ukraine that fans took away with them might be deceptive. \u003cbr/\u003eShe said sex industry in the country is \"working in regime of fast food\" while local authorities forget about \"real life of Ukrainian citizens.\"\u003cbr/\u003eShevchenko, a member of the FEMEN women's rights group, claims local authorities have increased pressure on her activist colleagues, who protest topless. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir latest protest at the Kiev stadium was quickly broken up by security officials and police.\u003cbr/\u003eTravel warnings for Ukraine were an overkill, says Butkevich from No Borders - but said that this does not mean the problems in Ukraine do not exist.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is worried that a positive assessment of the tournament by the fans might lead authorities to ignore serious social problems in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eLate on Friday, and away from the spotlights of fan zones and stadia, a local gay activist was beaten up while the assailants apparently shouted
