It's been built in the heart of old Dubai.The UAE is infamous for the size of its carbon footprint.Now...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eWhat's being billed as the Islamic world's first \"eco-friendly\" mosque is set to open its doors to worshippers in time for Ramadan. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's been built in the heart of old Dubai.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UAE is infamous for the size of its carbon footprint.\u003cbr/\u003eNow some organisations are turning green - to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. \u003cbr/\u003eKhalifa al-Tajer mosque, located in Deira, has been developed with that very much in mind.\u003cbr/\u003eThose behind it say it's the first eco-friendly mosque in the Islamic world. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong the building's green credentials are solar panels on the roof of the ablution building - used to warm up water for washing instead of conventional heaters. \u003cbr/\u003e\"To us, this is a very exciting moment, for having actually built, the first green mosque in the Islamic world,\" says Tayeb Al Rais, Secretary General of Awqaf and Minor Affairs Foundation (AMAF), which is building the mosque. \u003cbr/\u003eAMAF is hoping to cut energy use here by around 30 to 45 percent - compared to an older mosque of a similar size. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's not an easy job though - with the mosque spanning more than 44-thousand square metres.\u003cbr/\u003eIt will hold up to 3,500 worshippers when it opens later this month.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother element of the green thinking is the transfer of distilled water from air conditioning units. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If you look at the water, ablution area, all the ablution water gets collected in a tank, gets recycled,\" says Tayeb Al Rais.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you look at any tank, any recycling tank, it needs 20 percent fresh water to keep it flowing and to keep it fresh at all times. What we have done, we have channelled all the AC distilled water into the tank.\" \u003cbr/\u003eSo far 5.4 million US dollars have been spent on the mosque and the energy-saving elements, which it's hoped will lead to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEAD) certification.\u003cbr/\u003eWater pressure and flow is also restricted and timed in the ablution areas and left over water will be used to flush toilets and irrigate nearby plants.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The water goes back eventually into the flushing system and remaining of that will go into the garden, which is, a desert style garden,\" says Tayeb Al Rais.\u003cbr/\u003eThe desert-style garden includes plants which can withstand hot climates and that consume less water than grass. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it seems the green work here is not going unnoticed. \u003cbr/\u003eSyed Ryaz, an Indian national working and living in the area, says he will make an effort to go to buildings which have been created with the environment in mind. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is very good.. It(s) going to take the natural ways and which will give good effects to the environment so that way yes, obviously we will be going to the places where the green energy will be like.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFilipino Lia Layla Sari is also enthusiastic about having an eco-friendly mosque in her neighbourhood. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I will support that one the green energy so Inshallah (God willing) we will go there to visit in the Deira, in the mosque with all my friends. I will visit there,\" she says. \u003cbr/\u003eBut not everyone shares this optimism. \u003cbr/\u003eMohammad al Ameri says he's not bothered if the mosque is green or not. \u003cbr/\u003e\"At the end of the day, this is a mosque, I'm going go there just because it's using green energy? No. Mashallah (God Willed it) in Jumeirah we have a lot of mosques, so I would pray anywhere,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, Al Rais is hopeful the mosque will encourage lots of people to come pray - as well as thinking about reducing the carbon footprint. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd when they arrive, motion sensors will detect them - prompting LED energy saving lights to turn on in tandem.\u003cbr/\u003eAl Rais speaks optimistically about Dubai's hopes to be a greener city.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So hopefully this will be an example for anyone who's going to refurbish his mosque to look at least some of the elements, someone who's going to build a brand new mosque can come and ask us for our support to build a next green mosque,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are already plans in the pipeline by AMAF to construct a second green mosque in Jumeirah Lake Towers.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Khalifa al-Tajer mosque is expected to open in time for Ramadan at the end of June.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003eDubai, UAE - 18 May 2014 \u003cbr/\u003e1.
