Italian flag pan down to police in front of Berlusconi''s residence in Rome\u003cbr/\u003eBritain''s weekly news publication The Economist launched an attack on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in the closing hours of his bid for re-election. \u003cbr/\u003eItaly''s premier was headed to a rally in Naples on Friday, prior to Sunday''s elections, when The Economist published the headline \"BASTA. Time for Italy to sack Berlusconi\" alongside a picture of him with an irritated expression on his face.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lead editorial in the latest issue of the magazine criticises Berlusconi for his conflict of interest, noting his ownership of the three main private television channels in Italy, and the series of legal cases against him for everything from false accounting, money laundering and bribing of judges.\u003cbr/\u003eIts critical approach is nothing new, the Economist has a long-standing anti-Berlusconi position.  \u003cbr/\u003eFive years ago the magazine ran a cover story on him with the headline \"Unfit to Lead.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWhen Italy goes to the polls this Sunday and Monday it will choose between Berlusconi''s centre-right coalition and a centre-left coalition led by Romano Prodi.   \u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the magazine suggests that voters should chose Romano Prodi, they have fallen short of actually endorsing his candidature.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the title to the editorial, the magazine declared, \"Italians have a rotten choice to make, but it is time to sack Berlusconi.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePolitical analyst Professor Lawrence Gray said; \"The timing is typical Economist, they always come out with these publications, these articles, and it''s what they have done in the past. I think that it is clearly an attempt to condition the Italian voter, again from the English point of view.\"\u003cbr/\u003eItalians on the street reacted with some scepticism to The Economist''s
