of world's most iconic species according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). \u003cbr/\u003eThat was the stark warning given in Bangkok on Sunday to delegates from 178 countries at the opening of a key CITES summit on the trade in wildlife products.\u003cbr/\u003eThe opening message at the conference spelt out the situation - \"time for some super-heroics from the world's governments or face a biodiversity disaster.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt comes at a time when the poaching of African elephants and rhinos is at the highest levels in decades. \u003cbr/\u003eThe brief of CITES is to ensure that trade in wildlife doesn't threaten species' survival. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the regulated trade in animal products is being undercut by the illegal trade, now dominated by organised crime.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis is putting unprecedented pressure on species of animals, fish and trees. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the opening ceremony the situation Thailand, it's been a difficult run-up to CITES. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's because the Southeast Asian country is notorious not only as a major hub for illegally trafficked wildlife; it's also where much of the ivory smuggled out of Africa ends up, a destination second worldwide only to China, according to the wildlife monitoring network, TRAFFIC.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday Thailand's Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra pledged new moves to end the problem.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I believe that Thailand will be a strong ally to fight illicit global trafficking in ivory,\" she told delegates before
