It was massive that these ten men died but it did change things after that.''\u003cbr/\u003eIcon Entertainment\u003cbr/\u003e11.Trailer clip, ' Hunger ' \u003cbr/\u003eIt may not be in competition for the coveted Palme D' Or prize, but British film ' Hunger ' is causing controversy at Cannes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe debut film by Turner prize winning artist Steve McQueen is entered in the 'Un Certain Regard' category and is competing for the Camera D'Or.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a brutal and unflinching look at the 1981 Hunger Strike in Northern Ireland, where 10 inmates of the infamous Maze prison in Belfast starved themselves to death as a protest against conditions in the jail. Their ringleader was 27 year old IRA member Bobby Sands, whose death in May 1981 after 66 days on strike sparked protests around the world against the British government.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir main demand was to be given political status as prisoners, something that the then British PM, Margaret Thatcher, flatly refused to do stating that \u003cbr/\u003e' criminals were criminals '. \u003cbr/\u003e31 year old German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender takes on the role of Sands - a role he had a healthy respect for. ' Non conforming prisoners ' as they were officially called, refused to wear prison uniforms and went naked or wore blankets. They also refused to wash, or 'slop out ', and smeared excrement on their cell walls. Their ultimate weapon was a hunger strike.\u003cbr/\u003e'' We did a lot of research: former prisoners at the time, former people who were on hunger strike, prison officers, priests, a whole range of people who were involved in that time. And myself and Enda Walsh, the co-writer with me, went to Northern Ireland and we had a week of interviews and it was so heavy that when we came back we didn't speak to each other for about three weeks. All you ever think about is food yet all you ever do is look at calories on the back of tins to make sure that you're not going over your calorie count.''\u003cbr/\u003eThe film received a standing ovation when it was screened on Thursday (May 15), although critics are divided between condemning the film as a sympathetic portrayal of the IRA, and those who see it as a relevant commentary on present day events in Iraq and Abu Ghraib jail.\u003cbr/\u003eSands died without any of his demands being met by the British government, but Fassbender, whose mother's family lives in Northern Ireland, believes his actions eventually put Northern Ireland on the road to the Peace Process.''
