Sponsored by the Communist Party's Propaganda Department...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eMandarin/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eIn an bid to discourage superstitious activities, the Chinese government has launched an exhibition in Beijing proving myths and 'sciences' such as astrology are wrong. \u003cbr/\u003eSponsored by the Communist Party's Propaganda Department and the Chinese Science Association, the idea behind the expo is that science is above superstition. \u003cbr/\u003eIn particular many see the exhibition as another attempt to undermine the practice of Falun Gong, the spiritual movement  practiced by millions but banned by the Chinese government.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Beijing's latest effort to convince the Chinese public that science is superior to superstition.\u003cbr/\u003eAn exhibition of optical illusions, charts on planetary movements and diagrams showing the development of the human foetus. \u003cbr/\u003eThe week-long exhibition at Beijing's Military Museum is entitled \"Uphold Science and Civilisation, Oppose Superstition and Ignorance.\" \u003cbr/\u003eAnd people are arriving to view it by the busload. \u003cbr/\u003eGruesome photos are on display as a warning against veering from the atheist norm -- according to the organisers, these illustrate suicides and other tragedies linked to cults both in China and overseas. \u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition comes as it is emerging a significant proportion of Chinese people still hold on to such beliefs. \u003cbr/\u003eThat despite the fact the officially atheist Communist Party has fought for decades to dispel superstitious practices and beliefs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest threat to this aspect of government policy is the Falun Gong movement, which officials say is a danger to social stability. \u003cbr/\u003eThe state calls it a cult, but Falun Gong members say the movement is a spiritual way of living. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We think that the cult can cause great harm and threat to the society. We want to enhance people's ability of recognising cult and withstanding its temptation. This is a need for maintaining the social stability \"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Mr. Cui Jianping, Deputy Director, Science Popularisation\u003cbr/\u003eDepartment of China Science Association\u003cbr/\u003eFalun Gong was founded by an ex-government grain clerk in 1992. \u003cbr/\u003eSince then it has attracted millions of followers with its mix of slow-motion meditation exercises, Buddhist and Taoist cosmology and its message of moral living. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd that apart, the government has been unable to curb public interest in all things superstitious. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to a survey at a symposium organised by the government-affiliated Chinese Association for Science and Technology 35-point-five percent of Chinese citizens believed in fortune-telling, as opposed to the 28-point-seven percent recorded in 1996.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Now, although the organisation of Falun Gong is outlawed, it is not easy to quickly change the minds of those Falun Gong believers to let them believe in science. So it is very necessary to have this exhibition.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Mr. Shao, retired army officer\u003cbr/\u003eBeliefs in ghosts, witchcraft and supernatural abilities are also spreading, particularly amongst people with financial or health worries. \u003cbr/\u003eThe \"Oppose Superstition\" exhibition attempts to debunk those beliefs with a hefty dose of education and hands-on displays explaining how people claiming to have supernatural powers trick people to gain their trust.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)\u003cbr/\u003e\"We can understand why superstition is bad by viewing this exhibition and we can pass along what we learn here to our parents and our friends.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ma Shanshan, student\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors eagerly reached into a black box trying to touch a computer-generated hologram goldfish labelled \"You can see it but not touch it.\" \u003cbr/\u003eWith the push of a button, a card with a picture of a birdcage on one side and one of a bird on the other twirled, an optical illusion causing the bird to appear as if it were sitting in the cage.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd while superstition is mocked, science is presented in the best light. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Health and longevity depend on science\" said one display devoted to describing medicine and surgery. \u003cbr/\u003eIt also showed the division of cells in an embryo after conception and the chromosomes that determine a child's sex.\u003cbr/\u003eA sign reads, \"These are just cells. There is no such thing as reincarnation of a spirit.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAnother section featured diagrams of planetary orbits, taking aim at cosmology and at groups claiming a belief in the end of the universe. \"The motions of the planets are determined by scientific law,\" it said. \"There is no reason for the universe to explode.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough the display was not open to the general public, 30-thousand tickets were available to certain groups, it was jammed.\u003cbr/\u003eMany visitors were brought by their schools, army or armed police units. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Falun Gong has proved particularly popular among military officers.\u003cbr/\u003eBut officials still have to see whether stunts such as this will penetrate the Chinese psyche and a destroy a tradition of superstitious belief which is many centuries older than Communism.\u003cbr/\u003e Beijing, China 28 March, 2000      FEATURES\u003cbr/\u003e1.
