Various of people walking on street in Rome\u003cbr/\u003eTeenage girls who exchange vomiting techniques on the internet, scrawny models whose bones stick out on the catwalk, and boys who work out endlessly in the gym, are all symptoms of a society obsessed with appearances, or the \"bella figura\".\u003cbr/\u003eAnd all to often that obsession leads to eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, now thought to affect up to 2 (m) million Italians.\u003cbr/\u003eNow government officials are recognising the phenomenom as a \"social emergency\" and are taking  action to prevent the spread of the diseases.\u003cbr/\u003eThis month the Italian Ministries of Health and Sport launched a 1 (m) million euro (1.5 (m) US dollar) project for education and prevention. \u003cbr/\u003eThey are concentrating on the media, schools, the diet industry and sport.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project will include guidelines for magazines, tv, radio and internet aimed at discouraging the promotion of an idealised image of beauty as ultra-thin.  \u003cbr/\u003eAt the Centre for Eating Disorders at Rome's Policlinico Umberto I hospital, Professor Camillo Loriedo sees hundreds of patients with eating disorders every year.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe works on the psychological aspects, helping young people with eating disorders learn to express their emotions verbally rather than resorting to self-destructive behaviour. \u003cbr/\u003eHe also deals with such practical aspects as teaching bulimics how to protect their teeth - often destroyed by the frequent vomiting and resulting acidity in the patient's mouth.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Professor Loriedo hesitates to point a finger directly at the fashion and media world, he is more inclined to view the deeper psychological issues surrounding emotions and family relationships as responsible. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The media are important in this case but not in the way in which people usually think\", he says. \"So the models, for example, or the very very thin girls that present themselves in television are not in my opinion the cause of the effect that we see on young adolescents.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe government project plans to tackle sports like dance, gymnastics, and swimming, providing training and education for instructors and coaches.\u003cbr/\u003eIf the project is successful, dancers like Giada - a 27-year-old bulimic currently receiving treatment at the centre in Rome - might get help earlier. \u003cbr/\u003eGiada, began dancing at the age of two, but when she was 13 the National Academy of Dance said she was 2 kilos too heavy to be admitted.\u003cbr/\u003eShe then began a downward spiral of binge eating and vomiting.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I had to enter the ballet academy, but because of two kilos too much I was not accepted,\" she says. \"We want other people to like us, but we cannot do without our food binges. It can be one, two, I reached the point where I was throwing up 13 times a day.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe project will also reach out to men, who now represent one-tenth of the total number of Italians with eating disorders.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project also includes a plan to set up a website called \"Tu Puoi\" or \"You Can\".  \u003cbr/\u003eThe site will use language adapted for teenagers to talk about healthy eating habits.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is an effort to stop the growing use of what is known as \"pro-ana\" or \"pro-mia\" websites, websites for anorexics and bulimics who compete to lose weight, and share tips on how to starve themselves, and vomiting techniques.\u003cbr/\u003eItaly's Minister for Youth and Sport, Giovanna Melandri, has been working to combat the spread of eating disorders for years. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2006 she was behind the establishment of a code of ethics for the Italian fashion industry which created regulations on age and weight for models participating in Italy's numerous fashion events.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe code bans models under 16 years of age from the catwalk and requires models to present a health certificate before auditioning for a show.\u003cbr/\u003eIt also carries a promise from designers to add larger sizes to their collections.\u003cbr/\u003eMelandri says that as youth minister she could not ignore such a pressing problem for young people and believes that; \"Eating disorders are really one of the most relevant psychiatric illnesses and cause of unhappiness of the youth population in this country.\"\u003cbr/\u003eFor young Italians living with eating disorders, the importance of a clear and effective approach to tackling the problem is more needed than ever.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
