Close of girl being held by mother\u003cbr/\u003eAs Easter approaches, the Catholic Church has much to consider, ahead of Pope Benedict XVI's May visit to Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories. \u003cbr/\u003eJudging from the uproar over a Holocaust-denying bishop and his pronouncement that condoms deepen the AIDS crisis, he's clearly struggling with his message.  \u003cbr/\u003ePope Benedict XVI bathed in a warm welcome from huge crowds during the seven-day visit to Angola and Cameroon earlier this month. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the moment he stepped off the papal plane, the Pope found himself under attack. \u003cbr/\u003eWhen flying to Africa, he told reporters that condoms would not resolve the AIDS problem but, on the contrary, increase it. \u003cbr/\u003e\"You can't resolve it with the distribution of condoms,\" the pope told reporters aboard the Alitalia plane heading to Yaounde. \u003cbr/\u003e\"On the contrary, it increases the problem.\" \u003cbr/\u003eThe pope said a responsible and moral attitude toward sex would help fight the disease, as he answered questions submitted in advance by reporters travelling on the plane.\u003cbr/\u003eHis response was presumably also prepared in advance.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pope's statement was condemned by France, Germany and the U.N. agency charged with fighting AIDS as irresponsible and dangerous.  \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking in Cameroon's capital, Yaounde, the Pope spoke of his concerns for Africa's victims of violence and disease, including AIDS patients. \u003cbr/\u003eThree-quarters of all AIDS deaths worldwide in 2007 were in sub-Saharan Africa where some 22 million people are infected with HIV, according to UNAIDS.  \u003cbr/\u003eNGOs, who work with HIV/AIDS patients and to raise awareness, condemned the Pope's  comments on the use of condoms. \u003cbr/\u003eLucky Boy Nkhondwane works for the NGO Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) in Johannesburg. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the Pope's \"unfounded and irresponsible comments\" were shocking as they were \"made by the most respected religious leader in the world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eNkhondwane says that more than half the population of South Africa are Christians and follow the teachings of their religious leaders. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says it is not true that condoms contribute to the spread of HIV. \u003cbr/\u003eIn South Africa, almost one in three women aged between 20 -24 years were infected with HIV, according to UNAIDS figures for 2005.\u003cbr/\u003eAn NGO called Mothers to Mothers working, in Khayalitsha township outside Cape Town, offers HIV positive pregnant women training, advice, education and mentoring on how to avoid passing on the virus to their unborn children. \u003cbr/\u003eBut cultural habits are hard to break. \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at a papal mass in Yaounde, Peter Dbefi, a Former Cameroon Minister of Education said, \"In Africa, and in Cameroon in particular, the use of condoms is not traditional, and I think it is very highly rejected by men, African men.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBack in Rome opinions are also divided. \u003cbr/\u003eVatican expert, Father Antonio Pelayo, says the Pope's comments have been misinterpreted. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that many people believe \"that the wide spread use of condoms is not THE solution to the problem.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePelayo says that most Catholics agree that condom use is less sinful than infecting another person with a deadly disease. \u003cbr/\u003eBut he says \"the Pope can't say that, it's not that he can't say that, but this is not his role\"\u003cbr/\u003eCondoms are easily accessible in Catholic Italy, where up to 96% of the population are baptised Catholics. \u003cbr/\u003eGianluca says that although he disagrees with the Pope's comments on condoms, he respects the views of the Church. \u003cbr/\u003eFlorena says that the Pope is out of touch with the times. \u003cbr/\u003eBefore Benedict returned to Rome, a few dozen protesters gathered in front of the Vatican carrying candles and banners that read \"Pro life? Pro condom\" and \"Condom no AIDS.\" \u003cbr/\u003eIt was the pontiff's first visit to Africa, the continent that has the world's fastest-growing congregation of Catholics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe number of Catholics has ballooned from fewer than 2 million to nearly 140 million over the last century, while Africa also is ordaining priests at a higher rate than anywhere else. \u003cbr/\u003eOrdinations rose by nearly 30 percent in 2007, the Vatican reported last month.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Roman Catholic Church rejects the use of condoms as part of its overall teaching against artificial contraception.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this latest controversy could in the future weigh on cardinals when they choose Benedict's successor, perhaps leading them to look for a younger man more attuned to
