Various of Pascual with colleagues\u003cbr/\u003eAn autistic child's inability to understand and communicate with other people is a lifelong and often insurmountable obstacle.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Spain a group of psychiatrists and software engineers has developed a computer programme they say can dramatically change the lives of children with autism, and those with other communication problems. \u003cbr/\u003eLife for this little boy is getting better, much to the delight of his mother.\u003cbr/\u003eJoanes is Maria Jose Pozo Olaizola's first son.\u003cbr/\u003eAt his birth it seemed that everything was perfect.\u003cbr/\u003eLike many Spanish Basques the Olaizola family lives on the other side of the international border that separates the Basque Country.\u003cbr/\u003eSignificantly lower real estate prices in the French side of the region allowed them to own a beautiful chalet in the French countryside.\u003cbr/\u003eBaby Joanes was healthy and vivacious boy until he turned one year old.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom then he started to change, isolating  himself from everyone, even his parents.\u003cbr/\u003eA child psychiatrist was brought in to treat Joanes at an early stage and existing therapies have helped him improve his ability to communicate with people around him.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this year his psychiatrist asked his family to try out a special programme he'd designed with a local software company.\u003cbr/\u003eIt marked a turning point for Joanes family and especially for him.\u003cbr/\u003eMaria Jose Pozo says there has been a radical change in her son.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"We had a child that could barely communicate with us using random words. One of our first surprises was when he was able to tell us that he wanted to go to San Sebastian by car.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"e-mintza\" (Basque for electronic language) is a new technological way of communication.\u003cbr/\u003eThrough \"e-mintza\" people with autism, or communication problems through other disorders are able to interact with other people.\u003cbr/\u003ePictograms like these on the computer are a common way of helping the autistic to communicate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe application creates a game using a combination of images and sounds.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has a database of 400 images, but it has the capacity of up to 4000 allowing users to upload their own photos.\u003cbr/\u003eMarcos Olaizola is Joanes' father, a government official in the region's autonomous Basque Parliament.\u003cbr/\u003eHe believes \"e-mintza\" has overcome his son's reluctance to communicate.\u003cbr/\u003eOlaizola says: \"Before because he wasn't able to establish a communication he used to be frustrated. But now he sees himself more capacitated to communicate he looks more cheerful and willing to communicate. He feels like he is now more able to do it and wants to communicate with us more and more.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Olaizola, the change has had a big impact on the family, especially their younger children, seven-year-old daughter Julene and little Markel.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore he was born the couple knew there was a small risk that he too would have autism, but that doesn't appear to have happened to Markel, who is almost five.\u003cbr/\u003eJulene and Markel are the guardian angels of their older brother.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery day after school all three go skating and playing in the gardens by their house outside Hendaye.\u003cbr/\u003eJulene proudly declares: \"Joanes learns through pictograms. And I do the voice for those pictograms. In that way Joanes learns.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe Polyclinic Gipuzcoa is the largest medical centre in the San Sebastian area.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Joaquin Fuentes heads the child and teenage psychiatric department and he is the brains behind \"e-mintza\".\u003cbr/\u003eThere are no official figures for the number of autism patients in Spain, but Dr. Fuentes has conducted a study with 2000 children.\u003cbr/\u003eHis figures indicate that in the region one in every 290 children aged between four and six are autistic.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Fuentes believes the that the real average could be much higher because studies in other countries put the frequency of autism at one in every 55 newborns.\u003cbr/\u003eFuentes thought of creating e mintza when he saw the world renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking receiving an award more than two decades ago.\u003cbr/\u003eUnable to move, or speak he uses a computer to communicate his theories. \u003cbr/\u003eFuentes was convinced a similar device could help people suffering from autism, Parkinson's or Alzheimer's.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The amount of people worldwide that aren't able to communicate by word is enormous. A lot more than people thing. Nevertheless there are many people with a good visual memory. So we decided to create an instrument based on that visual memory to alleviate that oral communicational deficiency. Lets create a talking device that can speak for them. That is the origin of 'e-mintza'\"\u003cbr/\u003eMikeletegi is a technological park outside San Sebastian.\u003cbr/\u003eThe complex has become a haven for Spain's \"dotcoms\".\u003cbr/\u003eAmong them is Nesplora is a software developing company which combines computer systems with neuroscience.\u003cbr/\u003eThey create health related applications and programs that can be used on all sorts of computers and smart phones.\u003cbr/\u003eSince it was created five years ago Nesplora has launched three software applications and is currently working on five new ones.\u003cbr/\u003eProjects in developments include a program aimed at people with attention deficit disorder and soon they plan to release a 3D video game which aims to help people suppress pain.\u003cbr/\u003e\"e-mintza\" is the only app developed by Nesplora available to the public free of charge being part funded by France's Orange Foundation.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was launched in September 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eIt followed a close survey by Dr Fuentes of twenty families with autistic children.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far it's been downloaded 30.000 times and it's been considered a success in Spain.\u003cbr/\u003e\"e-mintza\" has been developed for Windows,  Mac, Android and soon iOS for iPad.\u003cbr/\u003eCurrently it is in Spanish, Basque and a bilingual version combining the two languages.\u003cbr/\u003eFermin Sanchez is the technology director of Nesplora.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says: \"The immediate future is to launch the French and English version. To operate with iOS operating system so it can be used on iPad 3 and all of its predecessors.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut \"e-mintza\" has a long way to go before it can be proved that it is effective tool and not all therapists are convinced it has a wide use.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the busy city of Barcelona specialists at a child psychiatric centre are reserving judgement.\u003cbr/\u003eClotilde Pascual isn't sure whether it's of use in the most severe cases.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says: \"If the patient is completely closeted in his own bubble one cannot give him this software therapy all of a sudden. If is a kid that has already evolved from that first primary stage then he or she can benefit from this type of treatment. Because I believe that it can serve as a mediator between he or she and the outside world.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOfficial statistics from America's National Institutes for Health and the Atlanta Diseases Control Center says one every 88 children are autistic.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's most frequent in boys - and is three times more likely than among girls, according to the figures.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough
