A U-N aid flight lands, carrying food from the World Food  Programme.\u003cbr/\u003eWatching -- and cheering -- some of the 25-thousand Rwandan refugees who'd set up a  makeshift camp there.\u003cbr/\u003eThey've since completely disappeared -- apparently fleeing into the surrounding forest  as rebel Zairian forces drew nearer.\u003cbr/\u003eThose forces have now taken the town, say Zairian government officials.\u003cbr/\u003eThe refugees reportedly had a five-day food ration each and were believed to be walking  southwest toward Kindu, 60 miles (100 kilometres) away.\u003cbr/\u003eBut they'd only just completed a similar trek to Kalima -- and were in very poor shape.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (French) \u003cbr/\u003e''25,000 people arrived at the beginning of February at a place called ......and then they  walked for more than 60 kilometres under very awful conditions and now they are in a  desperate situation.''\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Ariane Quentier, UNHCR spokesperson\u003cbr/\u003eRefugee workers fear the rebels will next attack the 160-thousand people in the Tingi- Tingi refugee camp, 240 kilometres (150 miles) southeast of Kisangani. \u003cbr/\u003eRebel leader Laurent Kabila claims that Zaire's government has armed former Rwandan  Hutu soldiers and militiamen among the refugees at the camp.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government denies it.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of the refugees are Rwandan Hutus who have been on the road since the 1994  Hutu-orchestrated slaughter of a half-million Rwandan Tutsis. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're reluctant to return home for fear of reprisals by the Tutsi-led government in  Rwanda.\u003cbr/\u003eKabila and his Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire took up  arms in September, after the government tried to oust ethnic Tutsis from eastern Zaire. \u003cbr/\u003eThey want to oust President Mobutu Sese Seko, whose 31-year dictatorship has left  mineral-rich Zaire among the worlds' poorest countries.\u003cbr/\u003eKabila, whose fighters have captured a 900-mile (1-thousand 450-kilometre) strip in  eastern Zaire, had threatened a new offensive if the government hadn't begun peace  talks by midnight Friday.\u003cbr/\u003eKalima, 170 miles (275 kilometres) west of Bukavu, Zaire, February 21, 1997\u003cbr/\u003e1.
