Close-up of portrait of Louis XVII - pulls out\u003cbr/\u003eThe heart of a 10-year-old boy identified as Louis XVII was being placed in France's royal crypt on Tuesday after genetic testing persuaded many historians that it was almost certainly the real thing.\u003cbr/\u003eThe heart was interred in a two hour ceremony at St. Denis basilica north of Paris. \u003cbr/\u003eThe burial lays to rest not only the heart of the boy-king, but also the controversy over his fate after the French Revolution. \u003cbr/\u003eLouis XVII was the son of the French King Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth were executed and the boy was imprisoned in the filthy Temple prison. \u003cbr/\u003eLouis XVII died of tuberculosis in the custody of the revolutionary government in 1795. He was just ten years old.\u003cbr/\u003eSeveral pretenders claimed to be Louis XVII in the years after the French Revolution, but recent DNA tests, carried out with blood samples from living descendants of the boy, have convinced the remaining members of the French royal family that the remains buried on Tuesday were indeed those of a French king. \u003cbr/\u003eTrumpets sounded to welcome the arrival of the tiny mummified heart at the Saint-Denis Basilica on Tuesday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe heart was carried into the cathedral in a crystal vessel covered in a thin purple cloth. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was later to be buried near the graves of Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI.\u003cbr/\u003eA crowd of around two-thousand people gathered outside the cathedral to watch the ceremony on a video screen\u003cbr/\u003eAlso on hand were members of many of the royal houses of Europe, as well as dozens of descendants of France's former royals, who entered the religious service to shouts of \"Long live the King!\". \u003cbr/\u003eThe descendents hail from the Bourbon dynasty, overthrown in 1830 - which to this day disputes the rights of succession with the Orleans dynasty that followed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ceremonies recognising the royal heart seek to close 209 years of rumour, legend and historical uncertainty surrounding the child's death.\u003cbr/\u003eSome skeptics still insist the mystery has not been solved. \u003cbr/\u003eMany historians had insisted that the true heir escaped and the sickly boy who died was a substitute.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was the heart of the little boy that was used to convince many that he was the Louis XVII. \u003cbr/\u003eThe heart had been cut out after his death in keeping with a tradition of preserving royal hearts. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than two centuries later, genetic tests comparing the heart to hair trimmed from Marie-Antoinette during her childhood in Austria confirmed the link.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the years, the heart changed hands numerous times and was only returned to the basilica in 1975.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was recognised then only as the heart of the child who died in the prison - not necessarily that of the royal heir.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Monday, the heart was on show at the St Germain L'Auxerrois church in the centre of Paris where a steady stream of people arrived to view the
