Thousands of people whose\u003cbr/\u003elives were ruined by a system now extinct.\u003cbr/\u003eFor every one present at today's meeting of victims of political\u003cbr/\u003erepression, there are thousands who didn't survive the torture and\u003cbr/\u003ethe labour camps. \u003cbr/\u003eFor years after their release the government ignored them as it tried to draw a veil over two decades of terror.\u003cbr/\u003eNow they have their own society which does its best to help.\u003cbr/\u003eMass purges in the Soviet Union ended with Stalin's death but the\u003cbr/\u003edreaded K-G-B continued to make life a misery for those who crossed\u003cbr/\u003eits path. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian) \"I used to believe in justice and goodness in people and that if you didn't do anything wrong, anything against the law, then nothing bad could happen to you.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Yeva Stroyeva\u003cbr/\u003eThe only thing Yeva Stroyeva did wrong was to fall in love with an\u003cbr/\u003eEnglishman named Colin who was working in the Soviet Union. When\u003cbr/\u003eColin proposed, Yeva went to ask permission from the K-G-B. They told her she could marry him, if she helped them.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian) \"He made it clear - you won't mind if when you are living in England our man from the Soviet Union visits you occasionally and you help him in some way and maybe you will share your observations with him. Did he think I was a fool not to realize what was behind it all?\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Yeva Stroyeva\u003cbr/\u003eWhen she refused, the K-G-B made sure that Colin never got to Moscow to register their engagement with the British Embassy and he had to leave the country without her.
