Wide aerial shot of White Knight flyby. \u003cbr/\u003eAeroplane meets space plane in the Southern California desert. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's what aircraft designer Burt Rutan is doing with a team of engineers and pilots in a bid to win a ten (M) million (US) dollar prize. \u003cbr/\u003eIn mid April, Rutan unveiled his entry in the X Prize competition - the global contest to put a privately-funded crew of three people safely into space and back down, twice. \u003cbr/\u003eRutan's entry is actually a pair of exotic craft - one is a rocket plane, dubbed SpaceShipOne, and the other is the White Knight, a twin-engined jet designed to carry it aloft for a high-altitude  launch.\u003cbr/\u003eBoth the jet and the stubby-winged SpaceShipOne are built by Rutan's firm, Scaled Composites. \u003cbr/\u003eA launch would begin with SpaceShipOne mated to the underbelly of the White Knight, for the initial climb to 50-thousand feet (15-thousand metres).\u003cbr/\u003eThe graphite-and-epoxy spaceship would then ignite its rocket after being dropped and soar to 62.5 miles (100 kilometres) before descending. \u003cbr/\u003eElapsed time from launch to landing would be about 30 minutes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe flight would be suborbital: high enough to be in space but not fast enough to be in orbit.\u003cbr/\u003eRutan set no date for the first attempt, which will come after further tests.\u003cbr/\u003eDevelopment costs were not disclosed. Rutan said the project is funded by an anonymous backer.\u003cbr/\u003eRutan is best known for creating Voyager, the aeroplane that made the first nonstop, flight - without refuelling- around the world in 1986.\u003cbr/\u003eSuccess with his latest creation could bring Rutan the coveted X Prize.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prize is pledged to the first private effort that launches three people, or one person and the weight of two others, to an altitude of 62.5 miles (100 kilometers) twice in two weeks. \u003cbr/\u003eRutan's effort is \"exactly what we hoped to inspire with the X Prize,\" said Peter Diamandis, the prize's founder and chairman of its board.\u003cbr/\u003eOther teams from the US, Britain and Canada, two dozen in all, have registered to compete for the X Prize.
