Just a short ferry ride from Auckland, the island winemakers are sipping on their...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eA small island off the coast of New Zealand's mainland is producing some full-bodied wines that are packing a punch on the international wine scene. \u003cbr/\u003eJust a short ferry ride from Auckland, the island winemakers are sipping on their success internationally. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's harvest time at Obsidian vineyard on the island of Waiheke, just off the coast of Auckland in New Zealand.\u003cbr/\u003eThese merlot grapes are now being handpicked and could go on to make another award-winning bottle of wine.\u003cbr/\u003eWaiheke is small and measures around 36 square miles.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's home to just over eight-thousand people, but there are some 24 branded vineyards, each of them independently owned.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite its size, the island is punching well above its weight in producing some of New Zealand's best red wines. \u003cbr/\u003eThe largest vineyard on the island produces around 35-thousand cases of wine annually, but the smaller ones average around three to four thousand cases each.\u003cbr/\u003eObsidian grows a wide range of grapes including Syrah, Chardonnay, Viognier and Montepulciano along with the Bordeaux varieties of Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvginon and Cabernet Franc.\u003cbr/\u003eObsidian won Gold medal and Trophy for its sister label Weeping Sands Syrah 2010 at New Zealand's Spiegelau International Wine Competition in 2011.\u003cbr/\u003eWinemaker Mike Wood has been working for Obsidian since 2005, after training in Germany and Australia.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says wine here is distinct.\u003cbr/\u003e\"One of the things that really separates Waiheke from other regions is the overall structure of the wine,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The tannin profile of the wines here tends to be very rounded and smooth and so I think we are achieving a really good level of physiological ripeness and that's down to, I think,  the soils, the climate. Yeah, it's very unique.\"\u003cbr/\u003eWaiheke Island is some 17 kilometres (10 miles) off the coast of New Zealand's largest city, Auckland.\u003cbr/\u003eThe island is characterised by its beautiful beaches, steep hills, an ocean-cooled climate and plenty of sunshine. It's a popular tourist destination.\u003cbr/\u003eRob Meredith owns Waiheke vineyard, Peacock Sky. \u003cbr/\u003eHe's also President of the Waiheke Winegrowers Association.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Meredith, there are several factors which turn grapes from Waiheke into great wine.\u003cbr/\u003e\"One is the climate, obviously,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's a component of what the French refer to as 'terroir'. So the beautiful climate here, we have an ocean buffered climate, so quite temperate, not too cold at night, no frost to worry about and not too excessively hot during the day. Coupled with that we've got some quite interesting soil types here. Generally they're highly mineralised soils, which is normally quite beneficial to growing particularly the red varieties, that really got the ball rolling on Waiheke.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMeredith says in 2013, 600 tons of grapes were harvested on the island which then went on to produce half a million bottles of wine. \u003cbr/\u003eWine sales alone are worth around $20 million New Zealand dollars ($17 million USD) to the island's economy.\u003cbr/\u003eMeredith says the large number of awards wines from Waiheke have received, both nationally and internationally, suggests the island is overachieving.\u003cbr/\u003eHe claims it's characteristic of the fact that producers on Waiheke are small and therefore focus on quality.\u003cbr/\u003eBut commercial wine growing has not been happening here for long.\u003cbr/\u003eStonyridge is one of the island's first vineyards and was set up in a little over 30 years ago in 1982.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe vineyard is a Cabernet-blend winegrower and has Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot grapes on their vines.\u003cbr/\u003eIt has a strong international reputation and its Stonyridge Larose is known throughout the world.\u003cbr/\u003eRight now, it's autumn in New Zealand and across Waiheke these grapes are being harvested.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're handpicked, then go into a de-stemmer, then are put into an open top vat for primary fermentation.  \u003cbr/\u003eHere, Stonyridge winemaker Martin Pickering is plunging the fermenting must of Malbec, an early step on the road to making wine.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wine is separated from the skins and put into barrels for malolactic fermentation.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt will then remain barrelled for anywhere up to fifteen months before it's bottled.\u003cbr/\u003eStonyridge regularly hosts tasting tours such as this one.\u003cbr/\u003eRandy Williams is from Winnipeg, Canada. He's sampled the Stonyridge 'Faithful 2012' Merlot and is enjoying it.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Oh I love it. Oh yes I do,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I'm looking forward to the Malbec too but this is my next choice, is the Merlot.\"\u003cbr/\u003eStonyridge has received numerous awards and accolades over the years.\u003cbr/\u003eWaiheke vineyard The Hay Paddock won Gold at the Hong Kong International Wine \u0026amp;amp; Spirits Competition in 2012 for their Syrah 2010.\u003cbr/\u003eHay Paddock winemaker Chris Canning has a tasting room and accommodation close to his vines near Onetangi, one of the island's white sand beaches.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says as time goes on, more and more growers are realising red varietals work well on the island.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Waiheke Island is almost a perfect marriage of soil and climate for red varieties,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the Waiheke Winegrowers Association, two thirds of the island's grapes are now red varieties.\u003cbr/\u003eA selection of other vineyards on Waiheke include Jurassic Ridge, Passage Rock, Cable Bay and Te Whau.\u003cbr/\u003eAP Television\u003cbr/\u003eWaiheke Island, New Zealand - 21 March, 2014\u003cbr/\u003e1.
