Wide of workers on a platform\u003cbr/\u003eDespite initial fears that it would take decades for East Germany's economy to match the growth of then-West Germany, capitalism has taken root well in the ex-communist states.\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty years after the Berlin Wall came down on November 9, 1989, and 19 years after Germany reunified, the investment poured into the five states that made up the former East Germany is bearing fruit, research and new figures show.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in 1991, according to the figures from the Berlin based German Economic Institute, the economic performance of the (East German) citizens accounted for one third of that of the West Germans. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Briefly after the fall of Communism there was a significant rise in unemployment,\" said Detlef Fleischmann, Mayor of Naquin, town in the federal state of Brandenburg, not far away from the capital Berlin. \u003cbr/\u003eThe main reason for the problems, Mayor Fleischmann said, was the collapse of the markets for the local producers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The major employer here was called Agro-technical Industrial Systems and there was not enough demand for them. But, Naquin and the region Havel had the luck to start the transformation early, the results also came early.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSince 1993, the federal government has invested (b) billions of euros (dollars) into the five former eastern states, Brandenburg, Mecklenberg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, and West Germans tax payers have been contributing through so-called solidarity taxes that flow to the East.\u003cbr/\u003eThe state investment has attracted investment from the private sector, and a number of companies from the West have expanded to the East.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The very big advantage was extraordinarily good and trained workforce we found here,\" said Ulf Sauerwald the manager of a plant in Naquin.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother plant that expanded to the East was Wirthwein, a family enterprise producing plastic elements for the car and household appliance industry.  \u003cbr/\u003eWirthwein was founded a few years after the Second World War in the western town of Creglingen.\u003cbr/\u003eThe company seized the opportunity in the early 90s and has since grown to become a multi-national player with plants in German East, Poland, China and US. \u003cbr/\u003e\"With a factory in Brandenburg (East Germany) I actually grew bigger, it brought an important customer which is today a main source of revenue. I would do the same thing again today,\" says Wirthwein CEO Udo Wirthwein.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the Eastern markets opened, there were also worries of jobs migrating away from the well paid West. However according to one West German this has not materialised.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We saw that the expansion in the East brought more work even to the original location here, so we're not worried,\" said Juergen Michel, and employee of the Wirthwein Western plant in Creglingen since 1976.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom 1993-2004, the eastern states and communities received 94.5 billion (b) euros 140.2 billion (b) US dollars  from the federal government and the western German states to build new roads and highways, modernise buildings and revive neglected city centres, among other initiatives.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, twenty years later there are differences between the two formerly separated part of Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile economic performance in the East this year reached 70 of that of the West, sizeable areas across the East are still notorious for high unemployment, and there is a difference in wages.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I hope that the situation will come when the wages and everything else will be equalised. has vowed to invest another 105 billion (b) euros through 2019 to ensure construction and redevelopment continues, along with an extra 51 billion (b) euros from the federal
