demonstrations on Tiananmen Square, which ended in a bloody government crackdown.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crowd of about seven-thousand gathered near the Zhongnanhai leadership compound in Beijing. \u003cbr/\u003eThe vast amount of demonstrators were followers of martial arts master, Li Hongzhi.\u003cbr/\u003eHongzhi is the founder of a new purist lifestyle ideology called Falun Gong (pronounced �fah-luhn gung�), which has become hugely popular in the officially atheist country. \u003cbr/\u003eFollowers adhere to a prescribed system of controlled breathing, martial arts, and meditation. \u003cbr/\u003eFalun Gong has 70 to 100 million (m) adherents throughout China according to a government estimate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe large demonstration just west of the north end of the imperial palace, known as the Forbidden City, was a highly unusual site in the Chinese capital, where authorities use strict rules to prevent organized protests.\u003cbr/\u003eLarge protests have not formed in the decade since the military violently put down democracy demonstrations centered on Tiananmen Square.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tenth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown is just over a month away on June 4.\u003cbr/\u003eThe crowd had gathered to call on the government to give them legal protection to practice Falun Gong, according to some members of the crowd.\u003cbr/\u003eSome participants claimed that government officials in some areas were branding Falun Gong a religion or a superstition and were meddling in its practice. \u003cbr/\u003eThe enormous crowd spread out along a main street that stretched about a kilometer north of Zhongnanhai, the leadership compound, and also on a street on its west side.\u003cbr/\u003eA crowd of police guarded the north gate of the leadership
