So these absorb the rays of the sun, what happens is that then the energy is converted through an inverted system that we have, it's like a box on the rooftop. That is converted into EC electricity. So this electricity supplies around 20% of energy into the property. This is the actual flow from the moment the sun hits the panels converted to electricity, coming out in the power outputs in the property. When it comes to things that are environmental, it usually is left onto the side or it's more of a peripheral application. What is more important is the GFA, the gross floor area, to maximise that, to gain as much rental income as possible. So when it comes to applications of being more environmentally friendly in a way you build, it's been peripheral. To that extent I would say that is one of  the main reasons why this whole subject of building green or green buildings, in essence, has been slow to pick up in Hong Kong. Mid of windows residential buildings\u003cbr/\u003eA building developer in Hong Kong says he hopes to make green housing the norm in Hong Kong. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says too many people in the region still prioritise having lots of living space over reducing their carbon footprint.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's the first developer in the region to convert a low rise building into eco-apartments and hopes other developers will follow suit. \u003cbr/\u003eHong Kong is renown for being a dense vertical city of high rise buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in Central District at the heart of the busy financial city, one apartment block stands out from the others.\u003cbr/\u003eGreen Span, as the apartment is named, is an 880 square foot duplex with a 450 square foot rooftop. \u003cbr/\u003eLaunched in February 2009, it's one of the six eco-friendly apartments which have been renovated by Atria Green Residencies. The company is  owned by KF Development in Hong Kong which focusses on renovating low-rise tenements built in 50s and 60s, or \"tong laus\" as they are known here, into eco-friendly service apartments.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rooftop has four photovoltaic solar panels which supply about 25% of the power needed for the whole building.\u003cbr/\u003eA solar water heater has also been installed on the rooftop which provides hot water to the apartment bathrooms and kitchens.\u003cbr/\u003eIn terms of savings, we are talking about 1.4 tons of green house gases that saves as opposed to normal electricity, which is considerable,\" says Amil Khan, director of the Atria Green Residencies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe apartment itself was renovated with a low carbon footprint in mind.\u003cbr/\u003eLocally sourced ceramic tiles were used for the floor.  The design of the apartment is very minimalist and the walls simply painted white with non-volatile organic compound (VOC) paint.\u003cbr/\u003eThe feature wall of the kitchen is decorated with mosaic tiles recycled from old beer and wine bottles.\u003cbr/\u003eThe dining table and coffee table are made from wood  from Forest Stewardship Council approved sustainable forests. But Khan says the challenge of building a green apartment does not end with finding and employing eco-friendly renovation materials.\u003cbr/\u003eOther features include double glazed windows which, not only reduce noise level from the streets, but also reduce heat penetration into the apartment. \u003cbr/\u003eThe apartment is also fitted with a wide range of LED energy saving lights and Euro energy class A+/A kitchen appliances.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In a place like Hong Kong where it's all about maximising profit. Kong currently converting low-rise apartments into eco-friendly residencies, larger developers have started to inject an element of the eco-friendly into new residential estates and into renovating mid-rise and high-rise buildings.\u003cbr/\u003eAll six of Khan's apartments have been taken up by tenants - 80 percent of them however, are expatriates who Khan says are more environmentally conscious.\u003cbr/\u003eKhan says his project is a perfect fusion of two very important subjects: the preservation of heritage and the need to protect the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd he hopes that
