Mid of Eugenijus Sabaliauskas driving away \u003cbr/\u003eLithuanian unemployment numbers have increased dramatically in recent months.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the government is working on improving the situation, a local taxi driver is documenting what poverty and unemployment do to people''s lives. \u003cbr/\u003eThe small Lithuanian city of Taurage, some 250 kilometres west from its capital Vilnius, has always been known as a regional industrial centre. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for the last several years it has become famous for an increasing number of jobless and homeless citizens, and also for a taxi driver who knows almost every unlucky person in the neighbourhood.\u003cbr/\u003eEugenijus Sabaliauskas has been working as a taxi driver for the last ten years. \u003cbr/\u003eEvery day he starts his work preparing his camera to take some pictures during his breaks. \u003cbr/\u003eAll his photo models are Taurage''s unlucky, who found themselves on the roadside of life. \u003cbr/\u003eBut for Sabaliauskas they are an object of general interest. \u003cbr/\u003e\"These people are very important for me because our (local) authorities don''t take care about them. They are not concerned about their lives at all, they can just take away their pensions and benefits taking them out to sobering-up centres or putting them away for 24 hours\", says Sabaliauskas.\u003cbr/\u003e47-year-old Sabaliauskas , who has been fond of photography for the last three years, has taken over 300 pictures so far. \u003cbr/\u003eThe amateur has become a local chronicler - he knows the life story of every person he shoots, and writes it down briefly on the reverse side of the picture. \u003cbr/\u003eSabaliauskas says he is interested in recording how people change and degrade during the course of several years. \u003cbr/\u003eBut very often he faces difficulties - many die before he visits them again. \u003cbr/\u003eSome local residents don''t understand his pastime and consider Sabaliauskas a crank and even mad, but his photo-characters look forward to meet him to tell the latest news.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I appreciate this gentleman, Eugenijus Sabaliauskas. He comes, takes pictures and then even gives us photos for free, those pictures of us\", says Balnys Jonas, who is one of Sabaliauskas'' models.\u003cbr/\u003eSabaliauskas finds his characters in the city of Taurage, which has around 28,500 thousand residents, and in the neighbouring villages. \u003cbr/\u003eHe comes to see them to know how they live and to take pictures, often giving them a copy of their photos and cigarettes.\u003cbr/\u003eJuozas Jankauskas, who has been unemployed since 1990, is one of those men. \u003cbr/\u003eHe lives in a house without electricity, 15 kilometres away from Taurage, with his three friends who are also poor. \u003cbr/\u003eThey have no money to pay for electricity that''s why have been living without it for the last ten years.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It''s their fault. Unemployment, scanty pensions and expensive food lead me to a life like this. And our authorities drove me,\" says Jankauskas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lithuanian government has joined the European initiative on fighting poverty and social estrangement. \u003cbr/\u003eThe country is determined to reduce unemployment rates by the end of the year and has worked out a special programme.\u003cbr/\u003eUnemployment remains one of the most serious problems in Lithuania. \u003cbr/\u003eThe official number of people who lost their jobs lies at 300,000, while Lithuania''s total population is around three and a half million. \u003cbr/\u003eLocal experts say that unemployment levels today are around 14 per cent and during this year it will reach 16.5 per cent.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the next years it is anticipated to continue to increase. \u003cbr/\u003eMost Lithuanians think that poverty has risen significantly since 2009 and that their financial state gets worse. \u003cbr/\u003eJob centres find jobs for people, but it is registered that the number of work places continues to decline.  \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to European Statistics bureau Eurostat, Lithuania is considered to be the third state in the European Union with the highest unemployment growth, after Latvia and Estonia.   \u003cbr/\u003eLithuanian President, Dalia Grybauskaite, has already halved her own salary and continues to put some other plans into practice. \u003cbr/\u003eIn March she awarded a prize to the most active citizens marking their social activity and tried to inspire others to help the distressed. \u003cbr/\u003eGrybauskaite rewarded Lithuanian singer Veronika Povilioniene who performs national songs organising public concerts free of charge and is also known for her charity activity \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think this year as it was announced (a year of fight with poverty and social estrangement in Europe) is very important for the entire Europe and for Lithuania as well. And for our state this problem (to fight with poverty and social estrangement) becomes serious because it is very difficult to fight with estrangement without the society and communities\", says Dalia Grybauskaite.\u003cbr/\u003eEugenijus Sabaliauskas hasn''t been awarded by the President yet. \u003cbr/\u003eDriving people all day long and taking pictures in his breaks, he tries to raise attention to the problem of poverty and social estrangement. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has some thoughts how to change the current situation, and he''s even stood for local government some time ago, but unsuccessfully. \u003cbr/\u003eSabaliauskas doesn''t give up and is going to try again soon.\u003cbr/\u003eHe gets in touch with several local newspapers and often shows the editors his work.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the pictures turned out to be very good and were published. \u003cbr/\u003e\"As journalists we think that taxi drivers are some of those people who know and see more than others. It is very good that a man took the initiative to take pictures. Maybe there is no art in these pictures, but it is a documentary\", says Renaldas Malychas, editor of \"Taurages Kurjeris\" newspaper.\u003cbr/\u003eSabaliauskas''s pictures are published rarely and he is not paid for his work.\u003cbr/\u003eStill, the amateur photographer continues to record the unsung heroes of modern Lithuania, even though most citizens consider them marginals and avoid them. \u003cbr/\u003eSabaliauskas wants to release a photo album and organise an exhibition, but for this purpose he needs to get a few more
