Pull out from television screen to wide of Times Square
US President Barack Obama personally welcomed the Dalai Lama to the White House on Thursday and lauded his goals for the Tibetan people, but he kept their get-together off-camera and low-key in an attempt to avoid inflaming tensions with China.
At the risk of angering Beijing, Obama did tell the exiled spiritual leader that he backs the preservation of Tibet''s culture and supports human rights for its people.
He also gave encouragement to the Dalai Lama''s request for talks with the Chinese government.
Speaking to reporters on the White House driveway, the Dalai Lama declared himself "very happy" with the session.
The exiled Tibetan leader said he spoke to Obama about the promotion of human value, religious harmony, a greater leadership role for women around the world and the concerns of the Tibetan people.
He said Obama was "very much supportive."
Tibetans gathered outside the White House on Thursday to welcome their spiritual leader.
Later in the day, after leaving the White House, Dalai Lama chided China for what he called its "childish" and "limited" approach to Tibetan efforts for greater rights.
He said he expected a negative Chinese reaction to his meeting with Obama.
Obama''s largely symbolic meeting with the Dalai Lama was kept low-key by comparison to other visiting leaders, out of deference to China who had urged Obama not to meet.
With Beijing considering the Buddhist monk a separatist, Obama did not want to overly anger China at a time when its cooperation is needed on nuclear standoffs with Iran and North Korea, climate change and other priorities.
China is a rising global rival for the US and a hoped-for partner.
So Obama sat down with his fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate in the Map Room rather than the much-more-photographed Oval Office where presidents usually visit with international leaders.
Their talks were held entirely out of view of cameras and the public.
The White House released only a single official picture, rather than allow independent photographers and reporters to see the two men together.
Even the description the White House press office gave reporters of the talks was done on paper.
At a briefing at the US State Department, spokesman PJ Crowley voiced concerns about the human rights situation in Tibet, but reiterated the government''s stance that Tibet was a part of China.
Crowley said he expected US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to express the United States'' support for "the preservation of Tibet''s unique religious, cultural, linguistic identity," during her meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader.
The timing was a concession, too, as Obama declined to see the Dalai Lama during his Washington stay in October because it would have come before the president''s November China visit.
All these gestures - small to many but important in the supersensitive world of diplomacy - were meant to tamp down China''s displeasure that Obama was holding the meeting in the first place.
China on Thursday issued a statement criticising the Dalai Lama''s meeting with Obama saying it "strongly opposes this kind of behaviour".
"Obama''s meeting with Dalai seriously breaks the basic rules of international relations, three Sino-US Joint Communiques and China-US Joint Statement.
