Wide of media\u003cbr/\u003eThe US military in Afghanistan has responded to accusations by Human Rights Watch that slow-paced investigations into deaths of people in coalition custody have \"spawned a culture of impunity\" that may have fuelled prisoner abuse in Iraq. \u003cbr/\u003eThe rights group said a failure to prosecute incidents in Afghanistan had allowed abusive interrogation techniques to spread to Iraq.\u003cbr/\u003eFollowing the criticism US military officials in the United States said eight prisoner deaths in Afghanistan have been investigated since mid-2002, a higher number than previously reported. \u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking on Tuesday coalition spokesman Major Mark McCann said coalition investigators would take as long as they have to, to ensure a culture of impunity does not exist.\u003cbr/\u003eNew York-based Human Rights Watch, in an open letter to US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld, reported two cases of detainee deaths it said were previously unacknowledged, one of which it said was investigated as a murder.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US Army's Criminal Investigation Command, on Monday, released a list of eight deaths that had been investigated.\u003cbr/\u003eOf those, five were previously acknowledged by military officials to The Associated Press. The circumstances of two more seemed to match those described by Human Rights Watch as new. It was unclear whether the eighth has been reported previously.\u003cbr/\u003eAllegations of death, torture and abuse at US detention facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan have led to dozens of investigations, and, in some cases, criminal charges against US military, CIA and contracted personnel.\u003cbr/\u003eRights groups have been particularly critical of the pace of a criminal probe into how two Afghans died at the main American base at Bagram, north of the capital, in December 2002.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Army announced in October that up to 28 US soldiers faced possible criminal charges, including involuntary manslaughter and maiming in those deaths.\u003cbr/\u003eCommenting on the criticism on Tuesday a spokesman for the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, said he thought that coalition
