Cutaway of crowd\u003cbr/\u003eTaiwanese President Chen Shui-ban spent Sunday in Houston lunching at a steakhouse with members of Congress and attending an Astros game, shadowed everywhere by expatriate Chinese and Taiwanese eager to be heard on the issue of Taiwan's status.\u003cbr/\u003eWearing a traditional cowboy hat and boots to match, Chen exited a Houston steakhouse smiling and waving to the crowd.\u003cbr/\u003eHe dined at Taste of Texas restaurant with U.S. House Majority Whip Tom Delay, and with Republican Kevin Brady and Democrat Gene Green.\u003cbr/\u003eChen did not address the crowd, where his backers greatly outnumbered opponents organized by the Greater Houston Supporting One China Alliance, whose members say their goal is not to impose communism on Taiwan, but to foster the eventual reunification and avoid civil war.\u003cbr/\u003eTaiwan has been regarded by Chinese officials as a renegade province, and China vows to reclaim the island.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore lunch congressman Delay met with reporters and talked about US support to Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the most recent census, about 47,000 citizens of Houston list themselves as being of Chinese descent\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 20,000 Chinese-Americans live in DeLay's district.\u003cbr/\u003eDeLay told the crowd that the timing of Chen's visit on the eve of the anniversary of the June 4, 1989, crackdown at Beijing's Tiananmen Square was noteworthy.\u003cbr/\u003e\"When you see the communist protesters out here, supporting communist China, they would not be able to go into Tiananmen Square and do what they're doing,\" Delay said. \"I am very proud of the fact that we have a country that allows people to come from mainland China and protest.
