In the end we only acted through the humanitarian way, we have kept people alive but we haven't protected them and as I'm going out, I regret to say we're in a free fall again. We are now evacuating our international staff. Wide exterior of UN\u003cbr/\u003eCalling it one of his \"biggest regrets\", the outgoing United Nations humanitarian chief on Tuesday said more could have been done to help the situation in the war-torn Darfur region of Sudan.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It's one of my biggest regrets, that we didn't do more for Darfur when there still was time,\" Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Jan Egeland, said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We could have been even tougher, I think, as humanitarians to tell the world that this was a cataclysmic disaster.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEgeland sat down with The Associated Press to discuss what he calls a \"totally hopeless situation\" in Sudan as he prepares to step down from office on December 12.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the end we only acted through the humanitarian way, we have kept people alive but we haven't protected them and as I'm going out, I regret to say we're in a freefall again.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 200-thousand people have been killed and 2.5 (m) million others displaced in Darfur since 2003, when ethnic African tribesmen took up arms against what they saw as decades of neglect and discrimination by the Arab government in Khartoum.\u003cbr/\u003eA peace agreement signed by the government and one rebel group in May has been ignored, and the violence has escalated in recent months, spilling over the country's porous borders.\u003cbr/\u003eEgeland said one of the most difficult problems has been convincing countries of the dire situation in Darfur and of what will happen if the free fall continues.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We would get a genocide, we would get a Rwanda, we could get a terrible situation if the four (m) million people who are in need of humanitarian assistance in Darfur, is joined by a (m) million people in Chad and another (m) million in Northern Central African Republic.
