Interior shot of Chavez seated with Morales at presidential palace, the two shake hands\u003cbr/\u003eVenezuela''s leftist president paid a last-minute visit to Bolivian President Evo Morales ahead of a regional leaders summit called to discuss the Andean nation''s controversial nationalisation of its natural gas sector.\u003cbr/\u003eVenezuela''s Hugo Chavez, a political mentor and close ally of Morales, said he came to Bolivia late Wednesday not to give advice but to offer congratulations to the Andean country. \u003cbr/\u003eThe two leaders will fly together to Thursday''s summit in the Argentine city of Puerto Iguazu, where they will join the presidents of Brazil and Argentina to discuss Monday''s announcement by Morales that he had nationalised Bolivia''s natural gas reserves. \u003cbr/\u003eMorales'' move has alarmed Brazil and Argentina, as well as the mostly European companies that extract Bolivian gas.\u003cbr/\u003eMorales and Chavez also planned to discuss Chavez''s idea to construct a 9,000-kilometre (5,600-mile) pipeline that would link Venezuela''s vast natural gas reserves through Brazil to Argentina, Chavez said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe pipeline, estimated at $25 billion US dollars, would also branch to Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay.\u003cbr/\u003eBolivia exports gas to Argentina and Brazil, and both countries have been resisting Bolivian demands that they should pay more for the fuel, used for power generation, cooking gas and cars.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Wednesday, Brazil''s state-owned Petroleo Brasileiro SA, a major energy sector investor, said it was freezing all investment in Bolivia. \u003cbr/\u003eThe company has pumped $1.6 billion US dollars into Bolivia.\u003cbr/\u003eSpain, worried about the fate of Spanish-Argentine company Repsol SA - another big player in Bolivia''s gas industry - also said Wednesday that it is sending a delegation to Bolivia to discuss concerns about the nationalisation.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Morales wants Bolivia''s cash-strapped state-owned Yacimientos Petroliferos Fiscales Bolivianos, or YPFB, to dominate gas production as part of the nationalisation plan, the company has functioned as little more than a bureaucracy for a decade since the industry was privatised. \u003cbr/\u003eExperts say it would take a huge infusion of cash to revive the company.\u003cbr/\u003eBolivia wants the company to oversee all aspects of gas production, refining and sales - but it''s not clear how it can come up with the money and expertise it needs to wrest control of the industry from the foreign companies now managing it.\u003cbr/\u003eIt''s even less clear what most of the foreign companies, and the foreign governments that defend their interests, will do now that they face dramatically lower profits.\u003cbr/\u003eMorales, a populist who won a landslide victory in December, has long vowed to take back control of Bolivia''s natural resources. While Bolivia has vast mineral and forestry wealth, the country''s most valuable asset is its natural gas reserves - the continent''s second-largest after Venezuela.\u003cbr/\u003eBut taking control
