Obama and Netanyahu are set to meet at a time that the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to attempt to warn the US President Barack Obama not to be too trusting of Iran when they meet at the White House on Monday. \u003cbr/\u003eObama and Netanyahu are set to meet at a time that the three-decade estrangement between the United States and Iran may be nearing an end.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents of Jerusalem appeared still to be highly sceptical of Iranian President Rouhani and Obama's choice in pursuing a diplomatic route.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Sunday, Netanyahu has said he is going to the United Nations to \"tell the truth in the face of the sweet talk and the onslaught of smiles\" - a reference to Iran's diplomatic overtures to the West.\u003cbr/\u003eMany in Israel believe Iran is striving to build nuclear weapons' capability - one they believe would threaten Israel - and they disagree strongly with Obama's approach.\u003cbr/\u003eRabbi Mordechai Kornfeld, for one, said he thought Obama was following a path of what he called \"appeasement\" toward Iran.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother Jerusalem resident, Ohad Raz, said he believed Iran was bluffing and he feared Obama was being too trusting of the Iranian leader.\u003cbr/\u003eBut retired civil servant, Simon Isikof, said Obama should be given a chance to make diplomacy work.\u003cbr/\u003eThe White House has said the two leaders would discuss negotiations with the Palestinians, developments in Syria and Iran.\u003cbr/\u003eThe topic of Iran was likely to be one of the most contentious.\u003cbr/\u003eObama spoke Friday with Rouhani in the first direct conversation between the two countries' leaders since they broke off diplomatic relations after mobs in Tehran stormed the US embassy in 1979 and held a total of 52 hostages for 444 days.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 15-minute phone call was a watershed diplomatic moment and that suggested Rouhani, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's permission, was interested in re-engaging with the West.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it also irritated Israel, a US ally that has declared an Iranian nuclear program unacceptable and a threat to the region.\u003cbr/\u003eIsraelis derisively called Iran's efforts the \"smiley campaign\" and tried to persuade the United States not to be swayed by Iran's courtship, however persuasive.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States vowed to consult Israeli officials as it weighs a shift on Iran, and the two certainly would share intelligence, as they have done for years.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's likely Netanyahu will press Obama not to be too trusting of Iran, whose new president delivered a conciliatory speech at the United Nations and declared his readiness for new negotiations with the West. \u003cbr/\u003eRouhani also said his country was not seeking, nor could it produce, a nuclear weapon.\u003cbr/\u003eThat does not square with Israel's position.
