Wide shot of two wolves\u003cbr/\u003eOnce an endangered species, conservationists in Mexico are celebrating the return of the Mexican Grey Wolf \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1970 only 50 of the animals remained in the mountain ranges of Mexico. \u003cbr/\u003eNow, San Juan de Aragon Zoo in Mexico City has registered the highest number of births nationwide.     \u003cbr/\u003eThe Mexican wolf is a subspecies of the grey wolf.  It was once prevalent in the south-western United States and Mexico's north-western and central mountainous zones. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the smallest subspecies of wolf in the world, it differentiated itself from the northern wolf at the beginning of the last ice age.  \u003cbr/\u003eWhile the northern wolf retreated to the US and Canada, the Mexican wolf stayed in the more temperate regions, taking advantage of a more benign climate.\u003cbr/\u003eThe wolves' tendency to hunt livestock led to population control programmes in both countries in the 50's and 60's, and as a result they developed techniques of hunting in small groups and dispersing quickly.\u003cbr/\u003eBy the 1970's, the species had diminished to about 50 solitary animals in the Sierra Madre Occidental, a mountain range in the North East of Mexico.  \u003cbr/\u003eBiologists stepped in, and through captive breeding programmes at facilities in the US and Mexico, the population is now estimated at about 250, including some family groups re-introduced to the wild in Arizona. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Mexican Grey Wolf has yet to be returned to Mexico's wild lands, because the risks would be too high. But some have been freed in closed ranches in the northern part of the country, and others can be observed at quiet times of day at the zoo. \u003cbr/\u003eWith more than 20 births to its credit, the zoo has its own line of wolves - the lineage of San Juan de Aragon.   \u003cbr/\u003eZoo director Juan Gonzales emphasises the need to preserve the species as part of the global heritage of biodiversity.   \u003cbr/\u003eNow 47 institutions in Mexico and the United States breed the Mexican Grey Wolf in a co-ordinated programme, ensuring that the species' genetic diversity will be preserved. \u003cbr/\u003eEach individual is registered with a bi-national commission on the wolves, which meets each year to discuss the future of the species. \u003cbr/\u003eBiologist Carmen Vasquez works with the wolves on a daily basis, observing them throughout the day to make sure they are healthy. \u003cbr/\u003eMexican wolves are smaller than their northern counterparts, with females weighing about 25 kg and males about 30 kg. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the wild the wolves hunt animals like deer, rabbit and rodents, but at the zoo they eat chicken, dog food, and raw horsemeat, with the occasional live chicken to preserve their hunting instincts. \u003cbr/\u003eThe zoo now has seven individuals, but Yashti, age 4, is the only one currently on display to the public, with the others
